Hi all,

I am a Texas applicant, and I was wondering about multiple acceptances from MD/PhD programs. Am I only allowed to accept one acceptance (I wanted more time to think about the locations and to take my parents to visit the schools). I was also wondering if it is okay to hold onto a MD only acceptance while accepting a MD/PhD acceptance. The MD only acceptance is from a school that has much stronger research, and I was contemplating enrolling MD only for a year and reapplying to their MD/PhD program if I were not accepted this year.

Thanks again for the help.

You can hold as many acceptances as you want until May 15th, though some programs may ask you to only hold one acceptance sooner. After May 15th you can still come off waitlists, and you're supposed to get 2 weeks to decide. After May 15th you can only hold one acceptance MD or MD/PhD, whether that's MD or MD/PhD. But before that you can hold MD and MD/PhD acceptances.

I think as long as your acceptance is at a MSTP you should never give up the guaranteed money and acceptance for a MD-only at a school that is supposedly stronger. You will pay that first year at the other school and the acceptance into MD/PhD is not guaranteed. The likelihood of acceptance with reapplication is very school specific, and if you're still considering that I would definitely talk to the MD/PhD program about it before coming to that school.

The AAMC Traffic Rules have changed for MD-PhD acceptances: http://www.aamc.org/students/applying/policies/applicants.htm
As of April 30, you can only have one MD-PhD acceptance. You can concurrently hold an unlimited number of MD acceptances, up to May 15. As in the past, you can hold waitlist spots up to the date of matriculation.

2010 will be the first year that the April 30 MD-PhD deadline is in effect, so the situation will probably be somewhat chaotic.

I think this is good advice.
