Hello

Anybody knows which schools offer a 2 year Medical degree for oral surgeons after finishing residency ? ( I don't mean the 6 year MD-integrated residency )

Thank you

Someone else correct me if I'm wrong, but all U.S. Allopathic medical schools are a four year minimum. (Some may let you stretch the first year into two years).

Yes Sgtbrushes, you're wrong. there are two options when doing an Oral Surgery residency, which is purely a dental residency, no medical student can do it unless they go to dental school first. The two options are a six year residency that integrates about 1.5 - 2 years of didactic medical school along with an extra four years of Oral surgery training, or a 4 year option that cuts out the added option of obtaining a medical degree. Each school is different and both options have the exact same scope of practice in all states, its just a preference thing if you feel the need to have an M.D. after your name (some think its makes you more credible to your patients even though they're both equally skilled at all oral surgery procedures as they recieve the exact same amount of training time. Actually, the four year programs get more time on just oral surgery training since they cut out a general surgery internship time. There are pros and cons to both options).

Goldenfingers here is asking if one were to choose to do a four year program and then later decide that they want that M.D. behind their name, are there any schools that would allow to to just go to school for two years and get the degree anyways. To answer your question, i've done some research myself as i'm interested in the possibility as well. Many medical schools won't actually advertise a program that is structured like that, but when you actually call the directors, alot of the time they'll let you do it, its pretty much on a school-by-school basis, so call around. There are a few that do list it as a curriculum though, i think they've been answered on your other post on the dental residency forum though. Cheers, good luck, i'm interested if anyone knows of any other schools too.

Thanks for the facts, Gentledental1. I didn't realize oral surgeons even had the possibility of doing M.D. school. I'm curious now about the Doc who yanked my wisdom teeth this year.

Can you get a faster MD after completing the OMS residency?
I am actually not in Dental School yet, but i plan on going through the Army's scholarship program. Then i want to do a residency in OMS, but would also like to get an MD. I dont think the Army offers that residency though and so i want to know if i can get a "Accelerated" MD through any schools after i do my OMS residency and serve for the Army for another 4 years.

I'm curious why you'd even want an MD. The oral surgeons were as highly regarded as MDs in every setting I've encountered. Seems like a lot of money and work for a couple of letters.
