Hello guys,
I am on my third cycle of applications and I wanted to hear your opinions on my case. Being a physician has been a dream of mine, but I realize there is a chance of it not happening.
I came from a low undergrad GPA (2.78) with a double major, recently got a master's and I ended with a 3.25. I could have done better but I worked two jobs in undergrad and one during the master's, I had no way around it and I had some growing up to do. I have taken the MCAT x 3 (x 2 for the new one), got 504 twice. I was lucky enough to get one interview in October and it went well but I ended up in the waitlist. I think it is safe to say that it is due to my scores. I like to think my extracurriculars are strong. I did work in multiple projects with electrical engineering, chemistry, biochemistry and philosophy in undergrad along with volunteering, some clinical exposure, and two leadership opportunities where I was helping set up free tutoring and the chemistry society. Also played basketball in undergrad and abroad for a semester.
I continued my EC's during the master's and got what I felt were strong LOR's as well. My personal statement is not the strongest because I don't like to overplay the difficulties I had growing up and mostly because I am thankful for them. I am an American citizen, moved abroad with my parents where they were from, was poor, moved back to the states and we were still poor. I had to work during high school to help. I only mention this because I consider I am an underrepresented minority of Hispanic background (it was granted through AMCAS) and I detailed some of the lack of resources I felt we had that I did not notice until later. However, I tried to express that same sentiment of being grateful of what I did have because I don't like to make it seem like I am in a pitiful situation. Now, I am hearing medical schools can blacklist you if you use it incorrectly, and I am scared that's a possibility because I did not write clearer details of my circumstances.
I would appreciate any input you have. I am trying to see if I have a shot this cycle or at all. Even though, I've started to open up to the idea of finding other ways to help people.
Sorry for the lengthy message and thanks for your time.
