Hello guys,

I am on my third cycle of applications and I wanted to hear your opinions on my case. Being a physician has been a dream of mine, but I realize there is a chance of it not happening.

I came from a low undergrad GPA (2.78) with a double major, recently got a master's and I ended with a 3.25. I could have done better but I worked two jobs in undergrad and one during the master's, I had no way around it and I had some growing up to do. I have taken the MCAT x 3 (x 2 for the new one), got 504 twice. I was lucky enough to get one interview in October and it went well but I ended up in the waitlist. I think it is safe to say that it is due to my scores. I like to think my extracurriculars are strong. I did work in multiple projects with electrical engineering, chemistry, biochemistry and philosophy in undergrad along with volunteering, some clinical exposure, and two leadership opportunities where I was helping set up free tutoring and the chemistry society. Also played basketball in undergrad and abroad for a semester.

I continued my EC's during the master's and got what I felt were strong LOR's as well. My personal statement is not the strongest because I don't like to overplay the difficulties I had growing up and mostly because I am thankful for them. I am an American citizen, moved abroad with my parents where they were from, was poor, moved back to the states and we were still poor. I had to work during high school to help. I only mention this because I consider I am an underrepresented minority of Hispanic background (it was granted through AMCAS) and I detailed some of the lack of resources I felt we had that I did not notice until later. However, I tried to express that same sentiment of being grateful of what I did have because I don't like to make it seem like I am in a pitiful situation. Now, I am hearing medical schools can blacklist you if you use it incorrectly, and I am scared that's a possibility because I did not write clearer details of my circumstances.

I would appreciate any input you have. I am trying to see if I have a shot this cycle or at all. Even though, I've started to open up to the idea of finding other ways to help people.

Sorry for the lengthy message and thanks for your time.

Thanks for taking the time to read my story.

I represent the Latino community. I grew up in Venezuela.
Fluent in Spanish and English (learned Spanish first).
Commitment to service: interpreter for a free clinic in Florida, VA volunteer, tutoring freshmen and sophomores in basic sciences classes. More recently; assisting elementary school children in underserved areas in Virginia with weekend tutoring, volunteer in homeless shelter, set up anatomy nights for local high school students interested in the health sciences and other similar events for underrepresented minorities in undergrad with the same wishes, set up special events for locals through the school I was studying in (Halloween since it was unsafe to go treat or treating, etc).
Currently scribing in ED and for an orthopedic provider. Doing research at local medical school.

LECOM Bradenton (DO)- Secondary // Unfortunately was not able to afford more schools. For MD schools I was granted the FAP
I probably could have been smarter about the school choice. Any thoughts?

What's IA's? Biomed sciences MS. Practically SMP but I was involved in research the whole 2 years as a back-up in case med school did not work out. Thanks for replying.

Why have you applied to so few DO schools? I feel you're on your 3rd round of applications because you have a very poor school list. Apply to schools with MCAT averages much closer to your score.

No IA's. MS GPA was 3.25, I improved through it as well. Grades kept getting better, I think I just needed a bit more time.

Financial problems. Only reason I have been able to apply is due to FAP. LECOM was all I could afford at the time. I was hoping to cover those financial concerns by applying for the HPSP thru the military if I got in.

If you don't mind me asking, could you provide some schools? That is what I was trying to do with howard, meharry and the DO school. I also looked at acceptance rates in-state vs out-state to increase my chances but you're right. There is a reason why I am in this situation right now and that's why I am asking for help.

Venezolanos are not generally recognized as UiM. The HBCU's are unlikely prospects unless you are of African origin.
Your best shot would be at your state publics and DO schools.
After that I can recommend the three Puerto Rican schools that consider mainlanders.

Thanks, I did not know. I thought it was typically due to finances. Do you think that because I put that I was a UiM it could have dropped my chances even more?

much appreciated, if I consider reapplying I'll save to send out more DO apps. Thanks.

Dude, that school list... It's like the opposite of what you should have done, which was mostly DO schools and few MD schools.

At some point you need to get realistic about where you can go. I'm also third time applicant with a ~3.5/510/solid ecs. I finally accepted MD schools do not like my app and applied heavily DO. I now have an acceptance. I'm impressed you actually got an interview at evms, and fingers crossed you get that acceptance, but if not your next app should be 95% DO schools. Good luck

As a non-traditional UiM, I agree. This is my first cycle, but with a 3.7 gpa and a 500 MCAT after 5 tries, I knew I had to lean heavily on DO schools if I ever wanted to make it in Med school. I applied to 7 MD schools (in-state, HBCs, and new MD) and 27 DO schools. I had 1 MD in-state II and 9 DO IIs, and now I'm already seating on 2 DO acceptances. OP you just have to be realistic when you're applying, and if you can afford it next time, make sure you apply very broadly. Good luck, with patience you will make it.

I'll consider it, thanks.
