At my med school we have the option of completing an MD/masters degree in 4 years. This is something that I'm interested in, but I also want to find time for other activities (student orgs, research, etc.).

How much of an impact will doing a masters have on the residency application (as opposed to third year grades, step 1, etc.)?

I'm really interested in the masters classes, but completing the degree with the MD will take up a fair amount of time. Thus, I'm just wondering if I would be better served to focus on other things (research, step 1, etc.) and just take an elective from the masters rather than doing the whole degree?

Thanks! 🙂

Is the masters in a scientific field? If so, you might be doing a lot of research in the masters anyway.

We have a ton of 4 year MD / masters students here and they are as social and free as everybody else. If the masters is important to your career goals, go for it.
