Hey guys, I know that most MD/PhD programs will consider you for an MD only acceptance if you do not get into their MD/PhD program. However, I have never met anyone who applied MD/PhD and got an MD only acceptance to one of his or her schools. Additionally, my pre-med advisor (yes I know they are not as versed in medical schools applications as they should be) told me that you are at a strict disadvantage for an MD-only acceptance if you apply MD/PhD. I was wondering if any of you know of individuals who have gotten MD-only acceptances, or does it occur quite infrequently? Any comments would be helpful!

Hey Flare,
I applied to Tufts MD/PhD, got rejected from the program, then later got interviewed and accepted MD only. It was really late though...I found out I got in on April 25, which gave me like 3 weeks to decide.
Anyway, its definitely possible to get in MD only off a MD/PhD rejection. I wouldn't say that you are at a "disadvantage" if its what you really want to do, and you have competitive stats, but you should really apply early and check the MSAR regarding your competitiveness at any school that you'd consider going MD only. In retrospect, I probably would have applied to the more competitive schools as an MD only candidate, to get my name in the pile earlier.

Hi:

I got 2 MD-only acceptances after only interviewing MD/PhD (one of the schools I had even checked NOT to be considered for MD-only  )

So, it's totally possible and probably school-dependent (so then I guess I should say it was UCSF and Case Western 🙄 )

schools are really weird, it varies.

UCLA and Penn both never made a decision on my MD application. They both waitlisted me for MD/PhD and that was it.

If you are rejected post-secondary, you would get your MD interview invite later (although i still got MD interviews at WashU and stanford after being rejected md/phd post-secondary, and an acceptance at washU).

other schools won't consider you for MD if they reject you MD/PhD (hopkins).

It really varies from school to school. I suppose this would be valuable information for people to catalog at the mdphd.org website or something.

In most cases I think the disadvantage arises from when the MD only ad com gets your app for consideration for admission. The MD/PhD adcom may not neccessary pass it on (unless you say otherwise) if they haven't made a decision with you whether that be to give you and interview or make you an offer. After having gone through this process, I realized that a lot of schools hold on to your application for a LONG time, putting you on the back burner just to see if something better comes along. That said, I have a very good friend who applied MD/PhD...was put on the waitlist for the MSTP and the MD and just got off the MD only waitlist. So it is possible. Again like everyone else has said, its really school dependent based on how the ad com functions.

Remember that the application process is big gambling game. Know the risks and the consequences, but don't let those intimidate you and hold you back from what you ultimately want to do.

FWIW, I got waitlisted for Hopkins MD after being rejected from MSTP post-interview.

Ahhh, wish they had to make the descision on an applicant in a shorter amount of time.

I was also seeing that some sites ask that you convey your interest in their MD-only program indicating that you would pursue research-orientated career. Anyone do this and find a better outcome? Alternatively, would you say that it might hurt your MD/PhD chances?

I know a few people who got accepted to some okay MSTPs, but got accepted MD-only at top schools. They took the MD-only spot, and then they re-applied to the MSTP program during their first year - and got in. So, you don't have to give up on MSTP if you get MD-only acceptance.
