Hey guys!

So I've been posting over on pre-allo mostly but I wanted to get more of the "expert" opinion. aka. people who've been there before.

I'm applying MD/Phd to about 12-13 schools (and regular MD to anothe 12-13). My GPA is solid (3.9 cum, 3.87 science) but my MCAT may just be the kiss of death: 30P. I knoew it's wicked low for MD/PhD (I had a bad testing day, had to take late in the summer due to an intense fulltime internship and didn't get scores back in time to reschedule) but i figured I'd throw it all into the wind and see if anything sticks.

Extra curriculars:

Research:
1.5 years doing cancer research (non-invasive treatment of leukemia)-poster, working on patents and publications but not going to happen for at least 5 months.
Fairly competative summer paid intership at Univ. Colorado Comprehensive Cancer Center (NIH Funded). 35 hrs/ week, poster and presentation

Clinical:
EMT-B (certification, haven't been able to practice yet due to state licensing issues)---includes several hours doing EMT ridalongs (training so I dressed wounds, took vitals etc etc) and ER shifts.
100 hours at local hospital - Post op and operating room
Shadowing - oncologist (amazing) and orthopedist (less amazing)

Other:
Teaching Assistant and tutor.
College Ambassador since first semester freshman year (give tours to prospective students, talk to families etc etc)
I've had to work almost full time hours since sophomore year (30-35 hours a week)
During the summers, I work two jobs, usually around 40-45 hours a week << this honestly has kind of killed me. Working that many hours, spending time in a lab and taking 17 credit hours meant I had no time to really do much of anything else.

I guess I wanted ya'lls opinions. I was flat out rejected from Cornell today after having only been complete for a week so I'm rather discouraged. 😳

EDIT: OH! And I've got a rather unique family history. (not URM or Non trad or anything like that) My mother has a really horrible case of Lupus and had a pretty horrible family tragedy in my teens. I talked about these in my PS since they motivated me to want to become a doctor (and high school/ college motivated me to want to become a physician scientist). I had several people read it and non said it came across as trying to get sympathy but rather as a motivational thing but I worry that that may have been a bad call on my part...

Some places are going to reject you on MCAT alone. I can't say that's what happened with Cornell but it's entirely possible. I think you've done the right thing here. Apply to MD and a range of MD/PhD programs and see if something sticks.

Stop worrying. There's nothing wrong with talking about your motivation to become a physician. If others are saying it's fine, it probably is.
