I'm an M2 applying to the program at my school this year. I have 2 years of basic research from undergrad, and 2 years of clinical research. I have 6 pubs, but no 1st author papers. I am however 1st author on 2 abstracts. MCAT was decent, (enough to get me into a top 20 school) but by no means outstanding.

I was just wondering if anyone had any knowledge as to whether applying internally to MD PhD is either a positive or negative. I've heard various different opinions at my institution, and wanted to get some more input.

I also wanted to know what admissions usually takes into account with internal applicants. Again, my MCAT is ok, but I'm sure is below the average for the MD PhD kids at my school, and I'd say that I'm currently a slightly above average med student with regards to my test scores so far. Are they more concerned about my stats, or my commitment to research? etc.

Thanks for your help!

I'm not at a top 20 school, but I was accepted into my school's program during M1. My application was received very well. Several interviewers told me they thought it meant more when a medical student applied than an undergraduate, as you already know what you're getting into.

From what I've seen, I think a greater emphasis will be placed on your performance in med school thus far than your MCAT. Your class grades are probably of greater predictive value with respect to how you'll do on the Steps and in M3 after all. Have you done any research at your institution? Having a recommendation from someone the committee is familiar with goes a long way. In any event, my best advice is to make sure you're quite knowledgeable about your research and be ready to talk about it & other topics with enthusiasm & thoughtfulness. Good luck.
