Before I ask this: I know it doesn't matter what major you choose for med school. I realize that you can major in anything, however what about Md/PhD?

If you're going Into Md/PhD would it preferred if you majored in something along the lines of what you want to study? For example maybe microbio or neurosci if you wanna get your phd in either of those? This is the only way I see your major actually mattering.

Md PhD students or maybe some faculty members please enlighten me.

Not an MD or a PhD, but I do plan to do an MD/PhD in Virology. Most MD/PhD programs are geared towards the biomedical sciences rather than physical sciences. However, I believe I've visited some schools that do permit "majoring" in the physical sciences albeit the length of the program would take longer than 7 years.

cheers!

Really!! That's insane so it does matter that much?

What you major in doesn't matter at all as long as you have solid research experience. It is easier to obtain research experience if you are a natural science major (biology, chemistry, physics, etc), but it's not impossible to find a lab to work in even if you choose something like psych, math, or theater.

There is a research forum with a sub forum dedicated to MD PhD hopefuls as well as students and faculty alike that may help better answer your questions!
