Another SDNer and I searched, but did not find an MD/PhD-specific secondaries thread. So let's make it happen. This is a rough draft and in no way definitive. I am sure I omitted something, or included prompts that are in the regular secondary. Please let me know what should be corrected.

These are not the entire secondaries. These are MD/PhD program-specific additions to the regular secondary. The original secondaries thread can be found here: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=728204. If a secondary is not mentioned below, it means I thought there was no supplemental app beyond the regular MD app.

👍 👍 I have been looking for something like this but could not find any other than the secondary thread for regular MD. This thread will be tremendously helpful for us who are going to apply this coming cycle. Thank you so much for compiling the prompts and trying to extend this thread.

I have a quick question. Many secondary prompts, such as those of Stanford and UCSF, ask for the same thing as the two AMCAS essays "Why MD/PhD" and "Research Description." Should I just copy and paste the whole thing in ? Even if I paraphrase a little bit, the main points will still be the same. Will that make the essays sound banal to the adcom, given that they have to read the same things over ?

Thanks a lot.

Having the same essay or something similar is a good thing. If you have two completely different responses to the same question then it may seem weird to the adcoms.

Some schools (Case Western) actually give you the option of copying your essay straight from AMCAS or submit a modified version with updates if you'd like. Otherwise, some prompts may incorporate parts of AMCAS prompts but have school specific elements such as why specifically this school or what your interests are. Others may ask for something like describe your current project or why MD/PhD + how that will help your future goals/what they are, etc etc.

The adcoms seem to want to hear the same answers over and over again because I can guarantee that Why MD/PhD, describe your research etc will come up again at your interviews and probably multiple times at multiple schools. So you should get used to repeating yourself.

I will add to this thread later in the week... This will be helpful for future applicants who aren't procrastinators like myself 😀

Definitely a question I struggled with as well. I agree with SBR, but I also tweaked my essay to better fit the program. Assuming there was no explicit essay that said "Why our institution", I felt like it couldn't hurt to end an essay on my career plans or research description with reasons why a particular program resonated with my interests.

:wow: ive been looking for this ever since i discovered the pre-allo secondary section...

Thanks SOOO much for posting this...and again :wow: thanks a lottt!

I can't access most of my apps anymore but here is one more to add to the list.

Tufts:

Describe your research interests. If the research of a Tufts faculty member is of particular interest to you, identify the faculty member and describe your interest in his/her work (3000 characters or less).

It would also be easier for future applicants if the schools were alphabetized. Kudos on the initiative!

Thanks for Tufts, will add. Also, great suggestion. I planned on doing that but ... got lazy. Will do soon.

Stony Brook

The MSTP at Stony Brook is an integrated program designed to produce well-trained clinical investigators and medically oriented basic scientists. It involves research training in a basic science department of the student's choice leading to a Ph.D., and the pursuit of complete medical school curriculum leading to an M.D. degree. MSTP students receive a full tuition waiver and stipend support throughout their stay at Stony Brook.
Students interested in the MSTP are encouraged to apply to this program at the time of application to the medical school and as early as possible, in order to facilitate the dual review process. Consideration for admission to the medical school will not in any way be influenced by application to the MSTP.
Please feel free to solicit any additional letters of recommendation specifically for the MSTP application. These should be sent along with all other letters of recommendation to the School of Medicine Admissions Office via AMCAS.
Please describe the basic and/or clinical research fields that you think you might like to explore and/or develop expertise in during your MSTP training. To the extent that you have defined potential specific future clinical interests, please describe the type(s) of medicine that you might be interested in pursuing once you have completed the MSTP.
Please note that these responses do not commit you to a restricted path if you are accepted to SBU; instead, they are used to help us connect you to the interviewers who can best address your potential interests.

I alphabetized, reorganized, deleted duplicates, added all my schools that weren't already listed, added OP to the list of contributors, and changed the instructions from (paraphrasing) "if a school isn't listed, then there was no additional secondary" to "if a school didn't have an additional secondary, then it will say so" so that someone who's browsing the list won't have to wonder if a school isn't listed because no one applied and knows the prompts or if the school didn't have additional MD/PhD specific prompts.

Wow, great work Soundnin! Thanks so much. Did you want me to update the first post with the latest, or are things cool as is?

Hey! Can this be made a "Sticky"? I do not want to see it get lost in the forum.

Thank you so much for this thread. I do have a question about LORs. My school has a pre-med committee and ultimately they choose which LORs will be submitted-- not me. So when various schools ask: "Please list the names of faculty who will submit letters on your behalf", how am I supposed to answer those questions if I do not know who specifically my school chose. Thank you.

So when various schools ask: "Please list the names of faculty who will submit letters on your behalf", how am I supposed to answer those questions if I do not know who specifically my school chose. Thank you.

This seems annoying. Have you asked the pre-med committee how it works? They would best know how to answer, as I am sure previous students from your school also had the same issue. Hope it works out!

Let's keep this thread focused on secondary prompts. If your issue is more complex than it seems, you should make a new thread. People on this forum are usually quite helpful!

Just recently submitted MSTP apps for the 2012-2013 cycle. Leaving town for a few weeks in July so I wanted to bump this thread to see if anyone got any MD/PhD-specific secondary prompts from this cycle yet. I'm sure they won't change much from last year to this year, but this thread will probably be very helpful for current MSTP applicants. Thanks for your help.

Bump! Sorry it's a bit late for current applicants. Best of luck to all.

Thank you for doing this 👍👍

Would you consider keeping the most current list in post #1? I think this would be helpful.

Thanks again.🙂

yep, would have died for this when I was applying. This thread should definitely be somewhere permanent.

Yeah really helped me. I will say however dont forget to look at the MD specific prompts too as you will most likely have to answer those as well.

does anybody know which schools have a completely different set of questions for mstp or md/phd applicants?
