Does anyone have any info on MSTP MD/PhD programs where you get your PhD in medical anthropology? I know this is rare, but I have found a few schools so far- UCSF, Harvard, and Case Western. Also, if a school doesn't have the PhD program you want, can you structure it yourself? Thanks for the help!

Add Emory and WashU

You will probably get better results asking this in the physician scientist forum. I don't know much about medical anthropology - I'm interested in MD/PhD in history of medicine. You need to get organized and make yourself a spreadsheet with all of the schools you are interested in and call each one. Some schools don't advertise their non-traditional MD/PhD programs so you have to ask. If the school doesn't have the program you can take a leave of absence after the second year of med school to do your PhD.

👍 They are not so bad over there. 😀

If the school doesn't advertise this sort of path, it might be an uphill battle. Either way, don't snow them into thinking that you are going to do basic science if you're not really interested in it.

Do a search in this forum, it has been discussed numerous times. Let me know if you have more questions.

The school I'm at does have a strong Anthropology department, but their average time to PhD is... 8 years. Not time to MD/PhD, time to PhD. They have no interest in trimming things off for you because you're an MD/PhD also. That's why the MD/PhD directors won't let you get your PhD in it. You can still do it in related fields, however.

Thanks for the replies-

Neuronix- which school do you attend? So far the other schools that I have looked at (USCF, Harvard, and Case) have MD/PhD programs that are 8 years total. I'm surprised that your school is 8 years for only the PhD!

They appear to have capped it at 7 years now, so the 8 years is probably historical data. My girlfriend could tell you much more about why this is because she was an anthro undergrad at Penn, but suffice it to say the reason we don't have an Anthro MD/PhD isn't because the MD/PhD office is opposed to social scientists. There are several other social science PhDs offered through the school of arts and sciences that have average times to PhD more in the expected 4-5 year range and these you can do.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign encourages social science M.D./Ph.D.'s; the University of Chicago also offers social science M.D./Ph.D.'s

Thanks for all of the responses so far- I really appreciate your help!
