I think this is a dumb question but if I go to DO school, then take the complex and the USLME, and decide to do an allopathic residency, does that change anything than if I did a D.O residency. I want to go into surgery and I realize there are both osteopathic and allopathic residencies for surgery, so I was wondering if there was any big difference, or if people apply to both just to broaden their chances.

I'm assuming your still not an MD if you go to DO school but get an allopathic residency.

You are correct that your degree would still be DO regardless of residency. Your degree is earned from your medical school, prior to residency.

But who you get board certified, either a traditionally allopathic board for “MD” residency or AOA board for “DO” residency would differ.
I didn’t know that, thank you! I’m assuming that doesn’t apply with the merger?

ACGME residencies tend to be older and of of higher quality. That being said if your goal is to practice, then any certified residency will let you practice without restrictions because a board certified surgeon is a board certified surgeon. Not that it really matters because of the merger noted above.
