Um.. If you want to be an optometrist, I'd say you should get an OD. If you want to be a physician or surgeon, you should get an MD.

Advantage of MD: you can become a physician
Advantage of OD: you can become an optometrist

... How can you really compare them?

hard to compare lol
different fields period..
OD is basically primary care of the eye.. and just the eye.. disadvantage you've got very limited scope of practice.
MD/DO( physican) : wide scope of practice, the eye and everything around it...
disadvantages, costs more and is longer + residency

no difference at all..
DO's learn OMM, which they can use or can decide not to use..
either way..
MD = DO by US law.
which, of course, like all laws, has interpretation issues... 🙂

thank you serenade for giving me your opinion on this. yah well i know they're practically the same thing, except when you go outside the US they consider you to be more of a chiropractor than an actual physician. so i wondering what other people thought. would it matter if you had an DO after you name rather than an MD.

just a question, how likely do you think it is that you will go outside the country in any medical capacity?

your username is sunshine so this would be the perfect time to make a smart ass comment like:

Thats cool just wanted to let you know in regards to this topic, can get abit heated among other things.

For Osteopathic [ DO ] their schools do their GPA calculation different then Allopathic [ MD ] which can be a advantage if you had a rough few years in college and did not do to well. They do what I understand is referred to "grade replacement"
If you want to practice outside the US you would need to go MD other than that not much difference but I am far from a expert on either of the two.

Just want to correct this common myth. There are plenty of countries outside the US where you can practice medicine with a DO degree. Also, despite common beliefs, a US MD degree is not always accepted in other countries either.

See an folks think my disclaimer is a joke:laugh:

As many of you know, I am a faculty member at an allopathic medical school. Last year, I had an unfortunate accident and was treated in the emergency department of my local community hospital. It wasn't until I was on the way home that I looked at the discharge paperwork and discovered that the doctors who treated me were osteopaths (resident and attending, I think). It was not an "osteopathic hospital" and I have seen M.D.s listed among the attendings there. As a "consumer", I didn't even know that the doctors were not allopaths. I received excellent care. I don't believe I'm alone among American patients in finding no difference between the two in a routine clinical setting.

MD >>>>>>>>>> DO , when it comes to not getting ridiculed by pompous imbeciles like pre-meds in SDN

Obviously you haven't spent more than 2 minutes on SDN. Why do people always ask this crap on Pre-allo either? What do you expect to happen?
