Hello All,

I have a question for the posters here. I'm in my third year of medical school and I don't think I would like to practice clinical medicine. I know its a little late for this realization, lol, but there's nothing I can do now. I'm in too much debt to just quit , so I was thinking of entering a field like pharmacy with my MD. Does anyone know what kind of job opportunities there are for MDs in the Pharmaceutical field and what the hrs/salary is like? Thanks a lot.

Why go into pharmacy? I would think there would be plenty of nonclinical opportunities out there for a MD.

True, but I always wanted to explore the pharmacy field also. So I was just asking to see if anyone here knew of any opportunities.

So you dont want to finish up your residency and whatnot? Or you do and still want to do something with pharmacy?

Your only three years into your medical education, Im sure in the next few years you will find something that interests you. You dont need to go to pharmacy school too to be interested in medicines, you can learn many things independently and then incorporate them into your practice.

Maybe MDs can help monitor clinical studies for pharmacutical companies? Or you could start your own drug company?

Pharmacists, good ones anyway, will have a clinical mindset. To go into pharmacy you would have to get your PharmD, which would take you another 3-4 years, assuming that you have completed the necessary prerequisites. It may be worth your while to explore non-clinical options within medicine.

Hey man, this is funny, I am the other way. I went for my MD after finishing my Pharm D. I want to practice clinical medicine. But anyways, you would be great for pharmacy with an MD degree. You will have some opportunities for an MD solely based on MD, but not too much unless you do something extra like an MBA or MPH (they are popular), maybe a DJD. With a straight MD without a residency or at least an internship you don't have to many options except maybe working as a drug rep. But trust me doing Pharm D is a more appealing option. But you are specifically asking for pharmacy so I'll focus on that instead.

As a pharmacist with an MD, you will be very attractive for any hospital. You would be able to relate to physicians and what they go through and they would probably let you do more stuff clinically and consider you as one of their own. As well you could probably fall into a clinical specialist position in pharmacy, considering that you have an MD already oppose to doing a pharmacy residency like most Pharm D's who are specialists do.

Pharmacy is a great field, and you can make a very descent living, with a lot of spare time to boost. I think as an MD you would be somewhat of a rarity. I think Pharm D to MD is more common, but nonetheless. I think as an MD, and if you are sure you don't want to do clinical medicine, I would say go do Pharm D. If you seriously want to do Pharm D, I would suggest that you find a school with an accelerated program so you can finish in 3 years opposed to 4. Also find a school that would give you some credit for your MD courses.

p.s. I am assuming you would want to be a clinical pharmacist? If not you could always go work retail, but as an MD I would think you would wanna do at least some clinical work. Of course it wouldn't be nearly close to the intensity of a doctor. Also I forgot to tell you, I recall reading about a guy who not only finished medical school, but finished anesthesia and worked as a practicing anesthesiologist. He then quit after a year or so and got his Pharm D and worked as a clinical specialist. He loved it and found that his job much less stressfull but at the same time he was satisfied professionally. See if you can find some of his postings, I believe he posted on the pharmacy forum, but you would probably have to search a little bit. He might be able to help you even more since he would be in very similar situation to you.

Best of luck man. If you got any q ping me. Later.

You're in your third year of medical school? Well, it's much easier said than done...but if I were you, I would keep continuing my studies. And if you really can't do it, then I guess switching to pharmacy won't be such a bad idea; I'm sure that you know almost everything about chemistry, biology, etc. Plus, I've heard the pay for a pharmacist is roughly around 75-80k. But I would convince you to not give up on your current studies; you worked extremely hard and spent so much time during those three years. Don't give up yet; it's not worth giving up now.

I don't think he wants to quit medical school, just wondering what to do once he is done, b/c does not want to practice clinical medicine.

whoops...i should've read his post more carefully...

Or, take a residency that requires a nonclinical focus. Several of my MD friends who hated clinical practice went into preventative/occupational epidemiology and clinical pharmacology. I have a MD classmate in the Medical Informatics program (medical computation, public health informatics, and bioinformatics) as a resident.

They're plenty of opportunities down that road. This question has been asked before. There's nothing wrong, but you have to look a little bit further. Contact one of your med. professors for advice into the nonclinical practices.

I know pharmacists who were MD's who retired back into the pharmacy profession. They run the same spectrum of happiness (sucidal ideation to ecstasy) as other MDs. You really have to know what you want to do before making that transition. Pharmacy has some clinical elements too, so maybe think about a nonmedical career change.

Hey soulsurvivor,

I think you should just wait it out.. Usually the third/fourth year med students
feel like crap after being exposed to a clinical setting for the first time.

Rough it out and do a residency in FP or something... things will go smoothly
onwards..

I have a friend in pharmacy school that plans on going to Med school when he's done (a bit opposite). Because of this, i wouldn't necessarily see it as odd for the reverse to happen. People make career changes all the time and many people just don't figure out what they want to do before ending professional/grad school. Good luck!
