Hi, I'm a mechanical engineering (with a minor in biology) major at Notre Dame (honors engineering program). I was wondering how this major could translate to the prospect of med school in the future. The reason I'm an engineering major is because I really enjoy physics and could potentially see myself as a biomedical engineer, but I may want to be a doctor. Assuming I take all pre-med requirements, would med schools look at this in a favorable light?

Thanks for your input!

I have a B.S. in ME also, and am currently in my third year of medical school in NY. At the very least, it was a talking point during interviews for med school and I wouldn't be surprised if it comes up again during residency interviews.

I haven't seen anything so far that has convinced me it would be super applicable to a career as a physician except for maybe ortho.

In engineering, understanding how and why things work is imperative. This may not be true for pre-meds, so it's good to get used to this now; it will serve you well in med school.

Fellow mechanical engineer here who was just accepted. Kind of a funny story, I've always thought I wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon who developed new surgical techniques and tools, sounds like the coolest career to me at this point. But, I know 2 other engineers who also wanted to be in ortho before going to med school. 1st one was a biomedical engineering major, now in first year of residency in anesthesia. 2nd one was a mechanical engineering major and is in his 4th year and he also decided he wanted to be an anesthesiologist. So, we'll see if my desire for ortho makes it to the end of med school.

MEs solve problems on mechanical systems, physicians solve problems on human systems. I think it should set us up well to be great physicians.

Now that I think of it, I know of another old doc from my hometown who was an ME before med school. Now he has been a practicing ENT for 20+ years.
