Hi everybody. My orientation for my med school starts soon. I was wondering whether it is okay to take a book-bag with a folder in it. I plan to carry loose-leaf paper in the folder to take notes. Or should I carry the folder in my hand? There will be no teaching or course learning during orientation. I know orientation is supposed to be super-relaxed, so I am wondering whether it would be strange to bring a book-bag?

Sorry for such a stupid question, but I can't figure whether I wanna take a book bag or not lol.

It won't be strange, but taking notes? Rather than being concerned about what you need to know, I'd be more concerned with what you don't need to know. Talk to an older student to see which lectures are a waste of your time.

A large number of MS-1's at our orientation had backpacks with them, which I guess is a pretty safe item to have with you when you don't really know how much stuff you're going to be handed by who knows how many departments and programs. Taking notes is pretty unnecessary, though. Anything you really need will either be in class syllabi or e-mailed to you incessantly.

I would just get a folder with some paper in it because we had a bunch of people speak and there were times where I would write some of it down, but other than that, I don't think you really need a bag, although I did see people with too.

I just used my phone to write down the occasional note worth remembering

Everything else was handed out, posted online, or emailed

just do whatever you want

everyone around you will be just as clueless so it doesn't matter what they think

Yeah during my orientation a few ppl had backpacks, completely unnecessary though theres no note taking. Free food and a lot of socializing basically.

My school incessently gave out folders with each day's materials during orientation. They were nice folders and they gave out so many I have yet to have to buy folders for myself in med school. I don't remember taking any notes during orientation. Everything was covered to exhaustion in the materials they handed out.

I'm glad I brought a bookbag to my orientation. They gave us so many handouts plus our syllabi for our classes. Like others said, nothing worth taking notes on, but it's nice to have something to carry stuff in.

Eh I wouldn't bother, but it's your call. At least take a bag to put stuff in.

Do schools not email orientation schedules with what is going on? I had a detailed email with the schedule and level of dress for each day during ours. You don't remember a damn thing they tell you...at least I didn't. Just lots of paperwork to fill out, ID cards to get, composite photos to take and how to wash our hands.

It sounds like you need an anxiolytic more than a backpack.

I would bring a backpack to stuff all your papers so you will have free hands to fill up on the free food.
