According to the MSAR, there are quite a few schools (MCW, Nevada) that require a psychology course. I've never taken a psychology course, but I have taken a research course under the biology department of my college called "psychiatry". Do you guys think psychiatry would cover the psychology requirement?

Also, I got a 130 on MCAT psych...I don't think that it would make sense if these schools rejected my app just for not taking a psychology course but I'm not sure how seriously they take it...would a technicality like this really lessen one's chances?

Should I take a psych course during my gap year? what should I do?

Thanks guys

If you plan on applying to schools with a psych requirement you may want a credit for psychology.

psychiatry =/= psychology. You would need to consult with the school for specifics.

What is the code on your transcript for the class?

I was a psych minor but a lot of my clinical psychology research was labeled PSY400 or something like that

It has a BIO course code 🙁

Yeah, then you definitely won't be able to pass it off. Psych classes are a lot of fun, interesting (if you have the right professor), and can be a nice break from all the science courses we have to take! At least to look at it on the bright side

A few places would take a different behavioral science class. You can check with individual schools or just take the class. Hi f you don't want basic psych there are plenty of interesting psych classes.

1) The psychiatry class will not count for the psychology requirement
2) Admissions process does not check for fulfillment of prereq requirements, having the class or not will have no affect on admissions
3) It will have an affect on matriculation. Prereqs are just after you have taken up an offer of acceptance during the pre-matriculation phase. Here they will look for the psych course as required by their policy. MCAT score will not be accepted even for any sort of waiver attempt.

You need to have the course. Pick it up anywhere, including a summer CC would be fine

So let me make sure I understand this.

I can apply for med school. I get accepted and I have not taken 1 course. So the summer before med school, I would take the course I am missing? Then I continue onto med school?
