Hi, everyone.

I'm still an undergrad but am wondering if the reputation of the medical school matters when it comes to getting into a top notch competitive residency program?? I personally hope to go into surgery.

It matters, but other things are way more important.

Grades/transcript
Letters of Rec
Personal Statement
Interest in the specialty
Experience with the specialty
Research
Publications and presentations
USMLE I and II
Extracurriculars

Can't think of anything else other than these that is more important than what school you go to.

Go where you're happy. Learn medicine.

You will probably get a more relevant and informed response in the Residency forums. most of the folks here are still in medical school and haven't gone through the residency match, so their information is secondhand--not that it isn't correct, but 4th years and residents are the most knowledgeable on the subject since they have personal experience to back up their opinions.

Good luck.

I can tell you from my experience applying from a relatively un-special state school in a moderately competitive specialty (EM) that it made no difference the school I was at. I got all my interviews including at some of the most competitive EM residencies. If you work hard you can get into anything from anywhere, the exception being going allo from osteo, because unfortunately there is still an anti-do bias in some parts of the country. You can still do it, but there aren't as many options available.
