Hello,
I just completed my first year of college. I ended with a 2.84 gpa. My first semester i got a 3.75 but the second semester i got a D in my pre calc class and an F in my chem class. I am retaking both next semester. Can i still achieve a high gpa? How ill med schools look at the retakes?

Hey Shambled. Retake, get As in them. The GPA used for applications takes into account both your first and repeat grade in a course. However, I don't think you're likely to get too much attention for it, since it is only your freshman year. (I had to retake multiple classes, and didn't seem to affect me too too much.) Things that look good to adcoms include an increasing grade trajectory. Also, think about what caused the poor grades. Slacking? Mental health issues? Physical health issues? Personal life issues?

If anything is wrong in your personal life or with your health that could have contributed, be sure to address that. Especially if the issue is going to be an ongoing one (i.e., chronically ill family, personal mental illness.)

Also be open to trying a peer tutor if you feel the need. Lots of students seem to think this is a sign of weakness, but really, if it helps you kick a$$ in your classes, you'll have the last laugh. Also go to office hours. If the prof gets to know you, he/she will tend to be way more open to taking extra steps to help you.

If the grade issues were due to simply not studying enough, partying too hard, or doing too many extracurriculars, maybe take a good look at what you can cut back on (or do more of if it was the studying issue.) You still have a ton of time in college. Don't let one semester drive you to be too stressed out about making it.

And, if this is your worst semester and it was just a fluke and you get asked about it in interviews, I think it is perfectly valid to mention the fact that college is a big transition and first year tends to be hard for many students. But I really doubt they would ask if that ends up being the case. That being said, I'm not at a top 5 so have no clue what their process is like. I'm sure someone else will be able to post some good advice for those medical schools.

You can definitely still get a high GPA. You have at least six semesters left. We all struggle sometimes. PM me if you have any questions you want answered more in depth.

Chin up!

Honestly prob not. Not in the US at least. If you improve everything tremendously you might have a shot at a DO school.
