I really don't like the med school students at my school who preach about their Macs but I do like my iPod so I went to see what was Apple's new gadget was announced today. I was impressed and anyone who looks at this the new iPhone. I just don't know if it'll help me on the wards or cause me to slack and watch Scrubs in the mop closet. Anyone else impressed?

Oh sweet mercy, I am digging this phone. 😍

Alas, it is currently out of my price range. 🙁 However, I'm hoping that by the time my year 3 rolls around, the iPhone will be so established as a PDA that my med school will select it as required hardware for rotations. Thus, I'd be "forced" to buy it. 😀

you know what's even cooler? my apple stock just went up $7 in one day. 😎

keep it up Steve!

Anyone in for an ANTI-Apple union ? :meanie:

Im definately going to get this...it exceeded my expectation ..and im in dire need of a new phone...and im already on cingular..works for me

I watched the keynote in awe.
Waiting for June.

FYI, if you want this as a medical device, it will be terrible. Apple won't allow third party apps, and there aren't any out there.
So if you want a $600 MP3 player that can check email, sure, go for it. Buy something else with the letter i in front of it. If you want something you can check drugs, track patients, or evaluate ABGs on, buy a palm or WM5 device.
Same goes for blackberries.

Not to mention battery life is only 5 HOURS. Plus it costs $499 (4GB) and $599 (8GB) and you HAVE to get a 2yr contract with Cingular (aka Stinkular).

1. battery life: 5 hours of graphics-intensive activity is excellent. we're talking internet, videos, etc. it's not 5 hrs of standby.

2. med apps: when all the med apps first came out years ago, they were only available for palm os. then the windows pdas came out, and soon all apps were available for that platform too. if the iphone gets enough market share (which i think it will), the apps will soon be available for this new platform too. they will simply be widgets. now, this won't happen overnight, so if you're going onto the wards tomorrow, a treo or pocketpc is still your best bet. (another way the med apps might be available sooner is if a third party creates an emulator or a converter).

3. cingular: it's not the best carrier, but apple had to open with someone exclusively at the start. later, other carriers will be available. and prior to that, someone will figure out how to unlock it and use any gsm carrier.

I'd love one of these, but $500 or $600 w/ the required 2 year contract for a 4 or 8 gig ipod isn't really as good a deal as Steve claims it to be. I imagine the price will drop sometime soon after release or possibly there will be deals offered by cingular. When it becomes more affordable, I'd certainly plan to get one.

unfortunately he is right regarding the third party apps, and I am a converted mac-o-phile. Although if I was single, had a decent job no other outstanding debts, I cold see myself buying one of these they look to be really cool and useful for what it is

We'll see how well it sells once it comes out, but just because it's an Apple product won't guarantee success. The first motorola itunes phone was a disaster.

I'm just waiting for Apple's dynasty to fall. It will happen, it's only a matter of time. the PS2 sold something like 110 million consoles and now the PS3 is lackluster at best. 2 weeks before christmas, fleabayers were returning their stockpiles to walmart b/c all the systems were closing at below cost.

knowing its apple, the price drop will never drop too much, and i really cant see these things going under 400 anytime soon unless you go through ebay. 🙁 i want one so bad but cingular sucks.

I think it looks ok (I like the slim form factor), but at the moment no useful med programs + cingular = deal breaker
