a lot of my friends are telling me that vet school is way more competitive and harder to get in than any other professional schools.

I totally disagree.

It is true that there are only few vet schools but, competition is only high because of a lot of underqualified applicants.

avg gpa of people who get into vet school is only 3.4-3.6

i mean...whatever the best vet school in the u.s. is, try to compare it to harvard med school. do you still think vet school's harder to get into than med school?

in my opinion, it's 1.med 2.vet & dent 3.Pharm 4.podi 5.nursing
-----------------(~3.7) (3.4-3.65) (3.3) (2.9-3.1) (under 3.0)

which professional school do you think is the most competitive?

Hahahahaha.
This will be a very informative and useful thread.

you friend is right. vet is the hardest because they have least school. but it is not "way" more competitive though.
the hardest order in general
1.vet 2. MD med 3.dent 4.DO med 5.pharm 6.pod 7.nursing
Also, I think Harvard dental is harder than Harvard med 🙂

then, why is their avg gpa is still lower than med school?
and not many of them major in hardcore science like bichem or molgen when they are in undergrad.

The GPA is lower than med school but the seat is limited. Therefore, it is little bit harder to get in. I never said vet students are smarter than med students.

Fewer schools therefore it's harder to get in. People, this isn't supply and demand. It's like saying, "there are fewer schools for *******es, therefore it's harder to get in."

where do u guys think OD optometry would fit in?

i have a question though.... dental schools have less schools than MD med school. How come MD med school is harder than dental school?
vet is harder than MD because it has less school but how come dental school is not harder than MD med school?

i think OD is slightly harder than pharm but easier than DO med school

i think cuz a LOT more ppl apply to MD schools...and not only that but most of them have high gpa's too.

I was told the same thing freshmen year by our school's pre-health advisors during a health profession panel. I mean... there's probably some truth to it. I guess I don't actually know the details, but probably more EC recs? (I also vaguely recall more prereq classes that you need to take, i think?)

but vet schools have lower GPA's than MD schools and vet has less applicants also

top five most repeated threads on sdn (i.e. use the search function):
1. What are my chances? (guilty as charged)
2. state vs. ivy vs. specializing
3. dental vs. X (X=med, pharm, vet, etc.)
4. 'Official' dental school rankings
5. What kind of sandwich should I have?

exactly

there are only few vet schools (much less than dental schools) and thus, they are very selective.

but if their students' avg gpa is still on par with dental schools, that means most of the vet school applicants are much underqualified than pre-dent students.

if there were only 25 med or dental schools, you wouldn't be able to get an admission even with 3.8 gpa

OP..seriously...??
why do you care so much about it?? I just don't get it..

so, if we all say DS is a lot harder to get in than VS, then would you be satisfied?? why don't you go ask the same question on the pre-vet forum?? c'mon everyone thinks differently.. just let it go..

well said. finally a list that sdners can agree on.

i can NOT believe i'm saying this. ugh. but i <gulp> agree w/ dent std. wait i think i just threw up in my mouth a little bit! ok false alarm.

All I can say is that I envy the pre-pharm students because pre-pharm is such a breeze compared to pre-dent. 🙄

It is true that there are only few vet schools but, competition is only high because of a lot of underqualified applicants.

The number of schools has no bearing on the competitiveness which, incidentally comes from "a lot of", if anything, overqualified rather than "underqualified applicants".

While the thread is a little old, it is unlikely that the numbers have changed considerably.

Which would be the easier 100M sprint:

1. Me vs. 10,000 wheelchair-bound vets.
2. Me vs. 20 of my classmates
3. Me vs. 1 olympic sprinter

IRL I might actually lose all of these.

The avg GPA of people entering dental school is a 3.3? Are you sure about that?

1) MD schools 2) Vet school 3) Dental school 4) pharmacy school 5) Podiatry school, I have personally never heard of anyone not being able to get into podiatry school and yes I am a pre-dent (soon to be dental student) who thinks its harder to get into vet school than dental but to paraphrase many of the posters before me, WHO THE HELL CARES........

i guess some people wants to brag about their profession

The GPA is lower than med school but the seat is limited. Therefore, it is little bit harder to get in. I never said vet students are smarter than med students.

How can it possibly be harder to get into vet school if the average gpa is lower. A student with a 3.5 gpa will have a much harder time getting into dental school than vet school.

If you say its harder to get in based on the fact that there are fewer vet schools then you could say that dental school is harder to get into than med school cause there are fewer dental schools than med schools. But thats not true med school is harder to get into. You should determine the degree of difficulty based on how qualified you have to be not based on the # of seats. The number of vet school seats is only an issue if your stats are low.

Just look at the average gpas. Which ever schools have the higher average gpas those are the schools that are harder to get into because your stats have to be higher.👍
