Medcest?

I dunno how "often" it happens, since I'm one of the uncool married guys who doesn't get in on all of the gossip, but I know at least a pair of my classmates are dating.

There are a lot of very smart, fairly good-looking people in med school, so it shouldn't be that far of a reach to think people are attracted to each other.

what kind of drama?
think ER meets 90210 kind of drama

The same kind of drama that happens in high school. He said/She said stuff, who kissed who, who broke up with who. I'm also taken so I just sit back and watch the show :corny:

Oh yes. Some of us even walk around with belts that we put notches into. I think one guy is up to 10 notches and I'm pretty sure that no more than two of those were cadavers.

Seriously though, it occurs a lot.

It's not unheard of. Sit back and enjoy the show. :corny:

i don't understand why people date in their own class. sure, your M1 class is full of attractive and smart people. isn't the M2 class also probably full of these people, with the advantage that you dont have class with them??😕

You do realize that you don't wake up and say "I'm going to only go after M2's and up?" You tend to like and get along better with the people you hang around with most, M1's in this case. Unless your like the slutty freshmen in high school that bang the seniors for popularity

lol. i know. its just that i always see on sdn the argument of dating within your class vs dating non medical people. those are not the only two populations of people in the dating pool! where's the gray area between? med students from other classes? grad students at your med school? med students from a different school in your area? (if you live in such an area.) not to say that it would be easy to seek these people out necessarily, but if you try to make a mental note to AVOID dating in your own class- to avoid the drama and whatnot- it seems like you would eventually start meeting these other people instead. besides, it would be easy:
M1 Girl: Ohh, anatomy is sooo hard. You already took it, so you must be an expert. Lets get together for a private anatomy review session
M2 Guy: Yes
👍

. . . right???

except that there is a strict hierachy between each year of medicine. I wouldn't feel comfortable dating someone I consider as my superior rather than my peer.

Unless you ae into that kind of thing

lol, pretty much.

What kind of complex does one have to consider someone a year ahead of them, their "superior?"

ass is ass buddy!

Medcest: I like it! did you make that up on your own? I suppose I'll truck on over to urbandictionary and make a listing lol

^I suppose I did make it up. I didn't think it was too original. Afterall, we had "dormcest" in undergrad. 🙂

And what's all this about the strict hierarchy? Is a MS2 really that superior to an MS1? That's really news to me. I've been accepted and going to med school next year from working in investment banking. We have hierarchy of course, but a second year analyst would never let that get in the way of hooking up with the cute first year analyst...

 You have much to learn of the medical world.

Oh really?

I can understand the hierarchy of med student/intern/resident/attending, etc..

But hierarchy amongst med students? What does a MS2 have/know that makes them MS1's "superior?" They don't exactly take orders from them or have any higher standing, or am I missing something? Care to elaborate?

2nd year is significantly harder than 1st year. Second years like to boast their superior knowledge and experience sometimes or josh us that we study too much or haven't even reached the hard stuff yet. In my school we hang out with 2nd years sometimes but there is definitely still a class divide. It's hard to understand, but one year in medical school isn't the same as one year in college.

That doesn't mean there is no socializing/hooking up between the classes though.

they know everything you don't know.

Good to know. Thanks for the insight

You might've made up the term having never heard it before, but as far as I know, it's fairly commonly among med students, and I first heard it in 2005 as an M1.

My class had a few marriages between classmates.
