I am applying to medical schools this cycle and am trying to narrow down my list.

My stats are decent. The most characteristic aspect of my application is that I am heavily involved with journalism. I will even be attending graduate school for journalism before medical school. It is a genuine interest of mine, and I plan to write during and after med school (if I can get in 🙂).

So my question is, are there any schools that you are aware of that tend to favor applicants with diverse interests such as these? I know all medical schools say they look for diversity and well-roundedness, but I mean schools that carry through with that idea. I know for example Brown tends to be more 'liberal arts' than others.

Well I did tour NYU and Columbia and both had a similar feel that I really liked. Both schools sponsor a weekly "coffee house" or performing arts and music night. It encouraged people to show off their other talents and to participate in group events. Columbia had a full-fledged production of A Midsummer Night's Dream they were rehearsing for. Pretty neat stuff!

You should look at Carver College of Medicine (U of Iowa). They have a strong writing program and emphasize many electives in humanities throughout medical education. They also have a special program for writing and the arts exclusive to medical students.

Penn State was the first medical school to offer medical humanities. They require that you take come humanities courses as well.

I think all of the schools will value students with diverse interests and talents. I remember reading that Brown has "liberal artsy" stuff available for med students, as I believe was already mentioned.

For admissions maybe. If you don't want those interests to whither and die, though, you need to see if the school actually gives you times to pursue them. Mandatory attendance for everything + multiple 4th year core classes + limited vacation doesn't leave a lot of time for pursuing your art.

They had or have a regular concert type event put on bby student performers. It was a pretty popular thing and there were a lot of performers. It was really just a general vibe that I got, though.

(sent from my phone - please forgive typos and brevity)

Wash U in St Louis has student run talent shows/competitions.

Ooops. Wrong thread. How on earth did I manage that? 😉
