As a preamble : as a rotator all places want you to scrub, the attitude was there's no need to ask jump in, get your hands dirty. Most places did most things but the major difference would be exposure to PAD/CLI work, TIP volume, venous closure and sclerotherapy. Exposure to clinic for students also varied. Some places are more structured than others so if you want an experience ask for it.
UVA: great experience that's structured
-Types of procedures: Basically everything you can think of in IR besides stroke
- Do they let you do procedures: you will definitely assist but you aren't going to be first operator on a lot but there are opportunities to get access if you are with the right resident and you gain their trust.
- Teaching: very big here, conference and within the procedure attendings and residents are open to it.
- Research: There's definitely research available if you asked.
University of Michigan: big hospital with great and friendly staff
- Types of procedures: Basically everything but on the rotation you won't see a lot of ablations since cross-sectional IR does them at the main hospital, LOTS of peds IR so if you like it that's the place to be. The volume is huge enough that you can basically spend all your time there.
- Do they let you do procedures: you will assist a lot, techs are definitely protective here so try to gain their trust.
- Teaching: very big here through conferences, attendings, residents, consult services
- Research: it's there and they are open to it. They have a lot of rare cases and you can easily draft a case report from it and publish it or submit it as a educational exhibit for RSNA or SIR.
