hey everyone,
My apologies if similar posts have already been addressed. I would like to gain insight on my situation. I am currently enrolled as a 2nd term medical student at SGU in the Caribbean, however, I took a leave of absence with the option of returning in January, and as of recent, have extended that LOA until August. I have applied to D.O. schools once before, and was denied, most likely due to my low MCAT which was in the low 20s. However, I prefer not to attend this institution and would rather attend a D.O. school in the States as I feel in doing so I would have a better chance of securing a residency compared to an IMG.

As of recent, I was accepted into a graduate program that affords students a guaranteed interview into their DO school provided you meet certain criteria, and based on my research, they have a relatively high success rate of their postbac students matriculating into their DO school (90-95% of those who interview get into their DO school). Moreover, I have the option to return to SGU in August. It seems obvious to pursue the grad program, but some days I have the urge to go back to SGU. I would appreciate feedback on which route seems more viable. If I return to SGU, I'll have a LOA on my record; wouldn't this impair my chances of securing residency back in the states (I seek to pursue IM as of now). If I pursue the grad program, I am starting from square one, but they have an agreement that whatever med classes you take during the program, if you perform well, you don't need to retake those classes during medical school. What do you guys think? What would you do if you had these options? Thanks in advance!

So there are several things that you need to consider. 1) How likely is your acceptance into that DO school through the graduate program? If I were you and seriously considering doing that, I would seek out people who have successfully matriculate after the graduate program. I wouldn't trust school numbers, I would actually speak to those that have done it. 2) You will most likely need to take the MCAT again. With an MCAT in the low 20s, it is very unlikely that a DO school will accept you. 3) How valuable is your time? Doing the graduate program would be back tracking and taking much more time to finish medical school. 4) Depending on your medical school performance, you stand a decent chance of matching into IM somewhere without all this extra time. 5) And you don't have to tell us, but for your self, why did you take a LOA? Is there a legitimate reason that you can explain on residency interviews?
Finally, I would say the USMLE is going to be key to your success whichever path you choose. Make sure that you score well.

The DO ADCOMs on this forum would say that you are DOA unless your LOA was due to a medical condition.

The grad program would be a significant risk andas Bean_Bunny recommended you have to gauge how likely it would be to track over to the DO program.

Also, if you are doing poorly in the Caribbean, what makes you think you will do better as a DO? The sad but honest truth is that many folks don't get into DO schools because they have premed scores suggesting that they would do poorly in medical school. If that isn't your case...then disregard.

Are you expecting anything different from your prior two threads asking this same question?

Thank you all for your insight. With regards to the grad program, I've spoken to current students in the program, and all that I've spoken to have received an interview and have been granted an acceptance to the DO program. As mentioned, 90-95% of those who interview get into their DO school. And Thoracicguy, no, I don't expect anything different from my previous threads, I am just trying to draw a more comprehensive view on my current circumstance in making the right decision, and I believe current residents can comment best since they are going through/ have gone through the process. Thanks in advance!

Please continue this discussion in the original thread as has been pointed out. This is also not the appropriate forum as it is not a residency question.

Closing this essentially cross-posted thread.
