I was taking a psychology class once and the Professor mentioned this medical student syndrome.....as medical students take pathology or other courses related to illnesses.....also especially during psychiatry classes...a lot of students feel that they may have this disorder/illness because they imagine themselves having these symptoms they learn about....did anyone experience this? Just curious..thanks..

Hello,

I'm going to start med school in the fall but I did take a class on psychiatric patient interviewing in the last semester of my senior year. The professor, a med school faculty member, alluded to the medical student syndrome as you describe it and said that those feelings were perfectly normal and to simply ignore them.

1. SYNDROME SYNDROME SYNDROME SYNDROME

2. You make little to no sense.

3. It's called self-diagnosis. You will see this problem often with people who major in psychology seeing as they often do it just to try to understand their own problems.

Aww you fixed the spelling. Fiiine go and ruin my fun.

1) sorry for the spelling....this is a forum and i really don't care about my grammamamamtical mistakes

2) I think the post makes perfect sense

3) i was not talking about psych majors..im talking about medical students in medical school...

say you are learning about cancer and you feel that you have symptoms related to that certain type of cancer....you are definetly not doing that to understand your own "problem" whatever it may be

BONUS) Self diagnosis is different....in this syndromE students imagine having certain symptoms..key word...*imagine*

I'm actually going through this right now. I have been dizzy for about two weeks now and when it first started I went to urgent care where they did a full work-up (blood tests, CT scan, etc.) and they didn't find anything. I went to my regular doc a week later because I am still dizzy. She saw some ear discharge (yummy!) so they irrigated my ears and she also gave me nasal spray. I started looking up dizziness on web md, etc. and I noticed it was a symptom of MS...and I freaked out...I still am kind of freaked out and I am convinced I have other symptoms.

I believe partly what this person is talking about is psychosomatic:

Of or relating to a disorder having physical symptoms but originating from mental or emotional causes.

No, if anything i feel that i am immune to disease.

Yea...it's definetly a mental issue..but im afraid im definetly going to go through it....one of my professors died of lung cancer...and by going to clubs during undergraduate years..i've inhaled plenty of 2nd hand smoke...so everytime my chest felt funny...id start freaking out

I did that in my psychology classes all the time. Do I have OCD? Do I have excessive anxiety? Do I have too many unconscious memories controlling me? Thats what makes this stuff so intereting for me: you can diagnose yourself too(not correctly I guess but at least I can take a stab at it).

I think its pretty reasonable that I start wondering about my own body and my own psyche while I'm spending hours studying the human body and the human psyche. Thats part of the reason why it is so interesting for me: I learn things about myself too. I hope this doesn't make me seriously disordered.

They say that if you read through the DSM long enough... you'll eventually find yourself...

I don't know anyone who has experienced this particular syndrome, but I do know a few folks who learn about illnesses and don't want to touch or do anything because they think that everything will infect them. 😱 Natural reaction, but at some point you realize that we're walking germs (no matter how ultra hygenic) and get over it.

Short Public Service Announcement: Don't feed the troll.

Seriously. Boy, do I hate Bush, but you are a special kind of obnoxious. Also, it's hard not to take your signature as pretty antisemitic. Way to shoot yourself in the foot before you even make your point.

So, which Rosenberg did you shag last nite honey?

Eyecon, when my mom was a nursing student, she thought she had a new disease every week. One day I came home after school to find an ambulance and firetruck in front of my house. Turns out my mom called 911 and told them she was dying of Meningitis; she called them because she got dizzy once and vomited (one of many meningitis symptoms.) She was perfectly health. And yes, a big f'ing idiot 🙂

I think the quote I heard (from a neurologist) was, "Every medical student gets every disease in every course. The best cure themselves."

actually, the best come to one of my fully funded evangelical conferences and then fully cure themselves.

george, i'm a democrat and i share the same frustrations as you do with the ineptitude of the sitting president. however, i think you're giving all of us dems a bad name because:

a) you're really not that funny
b) you really are trolling

so please, reexamine your satire and redirect your misguided frustration into a more constructive cause. say... writing to a local op/ed column or something. sdn pre-allo isn't really the greatest place for this.

just chill out please.

I'm a democrat as well...and I agree with lesstalkmorock....the pre-allo forum is not the place to do this....and this is not the way to go about to ridicule our lame president...there are more constructive ways to do so! thanks for stopping the trolling!

It's a certain number of posts + a certain amount of time. Maybe your non-trolling account will have access, otherwise wait a week and you can troll to your heart's content in the lounge.

To the OP: It's one of the laws of the House of God: You're not the one with the disease, the patient is.

Read the book - House of God, by Samuel Shem.

Good Luck,
