Can someone please explain why people on sdn put "medical student" on the bio of their sdn handle and then "accepted class of 2016" in the signature?
You haven't even looked at your first scribe notes yet?
I get that you worked hard for your 12 acceptances but maybe you should relax until you step on campus?!
Just sayin, and let the flamin begin!

I sense a lot of anger and frustration in this post  why? Your medical student status gets less special the more people have them or something? Get used to it. You are not special.

Listen brah....we need to protect the sanctity of the "Medical Student" status...we can't go around willy-nilly letting anyone get it. Next thing you know Podiatry Students and even Optometry students will want the same status. It's a slippery slope man....

Yeah yeah yeah, we've had this thread before. I still agree with the OP, though. I didn't walk about saying I was married 3 months before my wedding, either.

I am not mad at all, I was genuinely curious - quite the contrary, I think these newly accepted prematriculants are the ones that think they are special. I already know what the short white coat means, trust me, we (medical students) are not special
Seems as though your post has some vitriol - mad bro?
(I have always wanted to post that- lolz)

Because, honestly, who the heck cares.... I changed it because I saw a bunch of 2016ers had, so...why not? If it offends you that much...

Well isn't the point of this forum to make yourself look good and see how much better you can portray yourself to other premeds?

Why do I feel like this thread was mainly aimed towards flatearth? You definitely got his attention. Even though I agree with you and I will change mine once I'm at VCU June 4th, who really cares?

No, not mad. Let me summarize my emotions as I read the OP. First I was amused then found it pathetic that people even made threads to pick on something that, as many others already pointed out, irrelevant.

Oh, no, people are justifiably proud and excited about something they've been looking forward to for years, oh the humanity....

Just make a mental note of it, and when they give bad information or step out of line, you use it as part of a multi-pronged attack to embarrass them and shatter their confidence.

I'll just go ahead and change my status to resident, then, nevermind that I'm just wrapping up my first year. Or better yet, attending. I mean, I'm -attending- school, so it's not really an exaggeration, right?

It's dumb to change your status before you're there. It's important to know where a person is in their education when you're taking/giving advice from/to them.

Just another reason to spend less time in the pre-med forums.

Great! I just wasted 8 ATPs clicking on this thread. :meanie:

too harsh.

Of course it would be ideal if they waited until they matriculate, but if they happen to change it sooner, it really isn't hurting anyone. There's bad advice and good advice from people in all stages of the profession

It's almost like a first month Med Student knows so much more than a regular pre-med.

It happens every year. Some people change it as soon as they get accepted in October, others change it a little closer to matriculation (May 15thish).

In principle, I agree. I think it's silly for anyone to call themselves a med student before they start med school. But practically, it's not worth the fight. Someone who has been accepted to med school (or even those who haven't) still have a lot of good information for those who haven't applied yet.

I think it is a little disingenuous because the "medical student" tag could be anywhere from MS I-IV and you expect a "medical student" giving advice to have some experience in medical school.

There are a couple pre-meds who have been accepted since the Fall and have had "Medical Student" status ever since, causing people to believe they actually were medical students. :nono: I'm waiting until White Coat to change mine! Like a mini rite of passage 🙂

Why not change it to ms1, ms2, etc.... Perhaps ms0 for the prematriculant?

I have to agree with the OP on this. I was listed as a medical student, but then I read this, and then said, wow, yeah...I was silly. I am not even a pre-med anymore lmao. I am teaching English on scholarship in South Korea! I admit it, I was 'a stupid'~.

I don't know if you have noticed but the NP students carry the medical student tag

On the other hand, I'm putting Medical Student as soon as I get mine. I think I've earned it as well.

White coat? Been there, done that. Horrible rite of passage.

The way I see it, you wouldn't tell people you're a medical student until you're actually a medical student. So why wear a badge that you wouldn't in person?

... I don't know. I've already started signing everything with MD at the end.

obviously kidding

Is this really an issue, will I become this anal/overprotective of a title on an online forum when I become a medical student?

Yeah it actually does hurt the flow of information on here, because folks tend to reasonably weight advice based on the presumed knowledge level of the poster. So if a question is about med school and a poster who is designated "med student" responds, folks are going to give that post greater weight than the post of some premed who might know just as much. So it hurts the evaluation of information on this board. The fact that there's bad advice from various folks on this board doesn't really change the fact that people are better able to filter advice if a person who claims to be a med student has actually had at least a few days of med school first. I've long been the proponent of not having people change status until orientation is over. People are understandably excited about getting in, but they haven't really earned the right to claim experience at that level yet. Patience is a virtue.
