Medical Students: How much of an advantage does a medical preparatory program (msp) give a medical student? In medical school coursework? On the USMLE?

Definition: An msp is a program on the postbacc level designed to mimic medical school.

I'm wondering if it's worth it to take a year of classes to prepare for medical school/USMLE even if my stats were fine already. I guess this also begs the question of how much grades and USMLE scores matter if you want a competitive residency.

(Inspired by the similar thread about whether or not science majors have an advantage. Different enough for it's own discussion - so it doesn't take the other thread off topic.)

Are you sure you're not talking about the SMPs (special masters programs)? I mean, I know some of them (drexel, for example) are called MSPs, but they're still graduate level classes, not postbacc (which is undergraduate credit).

SDN tends to know them as SMPs, if that's what you're referring to (take med school classes to prove you'll be able to hack it in med school), so you'll probably get more response if you go along with that terminology.
