As a Medical Student, how do I make myself more appealing as an anesthesiology applicant?

The answer would be:

The first step is to read up on what's new for medical students within the field. You may not know this, but in October 2004, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) approved a resolution to institute a medical student delegation within the ASA itself. This will be similar to what you've seen within AMA national student chapter or any other national med student club except that this is specifically for students interested in anesthesiology.

Learn more on this by visiting: http://www.asahq.org/Newsletters/20...eview08_04.html

The temporary med student website is: www.urmcaig.org

The student organization is just getting started. There are leadership opportunities available and plenty of access to the ASA where you will meet some of the "gods" of anesthesiology.

You can also private message me if you want more info on how you can get involved.

I've received quite a few responses and PMs so I'll answer many of your inquiries here. (Most of you all share the same questions.), but if there was something special, I'll PM you back.

Please forgive me though; I want to be thorough so when I return home tomorrow, I'll post my response. For now, the first thing you need to do is to get started on joining the ASA. After that you can join the ASA med student delegation as described in the article cited above.

One last thing, I am not an official ASA representative...but I am fairly well-acquainted with the process so I'm glad to share that info via this website.

I'll get you up to speed on the rest tomorrow.

Let me share with you and excerpt from the most recent communication from the co-chairs of the national ASA Med Student Delegation. In addition, don't forget, you need to first join the ASA and then join the ASA MSD as well once you've joined the ASA. Read here for more instructions:

Hello Everyone,

It's official! The ASA Medical Student Delegation (ASA-MSD) is an official
part of the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

In short, the annual meeting was a great success. Thanks to all those who
were able to attend. We were able to be present at the Resident Component
House of Delegates meeting for the first time in ASA history. We were also
asked to sit on the Resident's Feedback Forum, where we were told that
involvement of medical students is the primary goal for this coming year.
Finally, we had an inaugural meeting, where students from Texas Tech, AZCOM, KCOM, and University of Rochester were present and discussed the future of the MSD.

The most important thing, of course, is that the MSD has been approved as an offical part of the ASA. What's even more exciting, though, is that we have been granted 5 seats on the House of Delegates. What does that mean? We will have representation in the ASA for the first time since its inception in 1905. We will be voting, participating members. This is an unexpected turn of events that is truly remarkable.

We're excited to share this opportunity with all those who have contacted us
already. We're making huge strides toward becoming a fully functioning,
autonomous branch of the ASA. As always, if there are any questions, feel
free to email us.

--Emmett and Cheri (Co-Chairs)

Don't forget, after you've joined the ASA under the med student membership category, be sure to email: [email protected] and tell them you want to join the Med Student Delegation.

I have gotten various PMs on this thread. Feel free to post your questions on the thread as well so questions can be answered in public.

Sleepytime;

Slightly off topic here, but is Stefan Lewis still an attending there at Strong Memorial? He was chief resident when I did an anesth elective there in fall 2002. I really enjoyed working with him.
