Hey everybody,
I just started my medicine rotation, and I thought I was ambitious enough to read the suggested Cecil's but after 4 chapters I realize that while I understand a lot of stuff, I don't retain the details as well as I may need to for the shelf.
So I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for good resources to study for hte medicine shelf. I've heard/read good things bout MKSAP...but what else is out there that would be good.
Thanks in advance for the advice.
Ralhtar🙂

MKSAP is a great resource. I also found UpToDate to be very useful. Seriously, those two made up the large bulk of my studying for the shelf. I didn't like any of the review books, but I'm not a big fan of that genre in general.

read about your patients (UpToDate is good) and do MKSAP +/- PreTest

good luck

I just had my int med exam yesterday, only used First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship, and got screwed on questions on Infectious Mononucleosis, Bell's Palsy and Cold Immunohemolytic Anemia..the book does not mention much about either!
What else should I be studying?

yar - it's considered a lofty goal for interns to get thru cecils in their first YEAR of residency. don't worry if it's too much to study.
good study tools for the medicine shelf are mksap, case files, and the "first-aid" book. pocket medicine is a good thing to have with you on the floor as well (all the residents at my school carry it around).

Hey everybody,

I too thought I would read Cecil's when I started medicine. i think I read 2 chapters before giving it up. I did pretty well on the shelf exam by using Step-Up to Medicine (which I liked more than first aid), MKSAP-3, pocket medicine on rounds, and UTD for my patients. Still seems like a lot of reading but it was a much easier goal to reach. good luck :luck:

Step Up to Medicine is a great book. Do questions in MKSAP or Appleton/Lange. Read up on patients in the Washington Manual or UTD. That's all you gotta do. I'm not a stunner number one student but I did well on the shelf.

MKSAP is a very good tool to learn from. I used it to study during my rotation, not necessarily to quiz myself. I went thru a significant portion again closer to the exam to quiz myself and review.

I also used First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship and have mixed feelings about it. There were some mistakes, which was frustrating. I do think that reviewing it the week or week and a half before the shelf helped me pick up a few extra details I had overlooked.

I only read Harrison's 3 times the entire 12 weeks I was on medicine. I used Up to Date occasionally to review topics as they came up. This is all I did, and I was incredibly happy with my shelf score...it was MORE than enough to honor the rotation 😀

Use first aid as a guide and harrisons or cecils to fill in the blanks...you cant do much more than that. You can get 90+ percentile doing just those. MKSAP is okay, not sure why people like it so much. The answers are give aways, not like the real shelf but may direct your studies if you pay attention to the subjects.
