Medicine Sub-I

When do you guys think is the optimal time for a sub-I in medicine, for someone interested in IM? Do you think Oct-Nov is too late for a program that I'm very interested in? Also, generally, is December too late in the year to do electives at places I'm interested in?

I did not match in IM but may still be able to offer you advice.

Taking your sub-I in Oct wouldn't be a problem if you didn't need the rotation to get a LOR. If you need a letter then you should do the rotation as soon as possible during your 4th year. If you feel your application is strong enough to just get an interview in the program that you are rotating in Dec then auditioning with them during Dec wouldn't be a problem. The only concern is that Dec is a good interview month and it would not look good if you had to miss a bunch of days to interview. If you want to use the rotation to assure an interview then it may be too late.

The advice we get is do to medicine sub-I as the second rotation of the 4th year (the first rotation should be an intense medicine elective to bring you up to speed... heaven knows I need it after general surgery, family, and #$^#%$&% psych).

i think the first two months of the senior year are the optimal times to get the sub-I in for two reasons. first, really try to get a LoR from the attending...this will be the last real barometer the residency selection committee will have in terms of measuring your potential for IM. the second reason is to ensure that this grade is in the transcript when you apply through ERAS. the sub-I is your most important 4th year grade if you are applying to IM, and it must be in the transcript for top IM programs to consider you.
