I just got off the waitlist a few days ago to Meharry and I really need some advice. Still hoping for an instate school or another one of the hbcu's to come through in the next week

Meharry

Pros:
  • Lots of friends and support
  • Going pass/fail + non-mandatory lectures for class of 2028
  • HBCU (urm)
  • Way better social life and city
  • Matches well
  • Will have extra money for personal expenses, food etc with COA allotment
  • A little closer to home
Cons:
  • Step 1 & 2 are taken back to back
  • Disorganized
  • Accreditation issues
  • Hear from students that the curriculum isn’t strong
  • Older building
  • Harder to get research and opportunities
  • Rotations across different states
  • Will need to move in less than 2 weeks

Northwest-Gary Indiana

Pros:
  • Largest medical school in the US, recognized name
  • Pass/fail
  • NMBE exams
  • Better curriculum
  • More organized
  • 30 minutes from Chicago
  • Move at the end of the month + 4-week summer pre-matriculation anatomy program to ease me into medical school curriculum
Cons:
  • Do not like the city itself at all - ghost town (Gary campus)
  • 60k population, abandoned buildings homes, and schools, enjoy living in big/diverse cities with lots of stuff to do and meeting new people
  • Smaller class size 30~40, prefer larger class size
  • Very tight COA (does not factor in food, board, etc)

I'd go based on cost. Chicago is close enough to Gary. It'll be expensive for all the rotations at Meharry.

Do you want a competitive residency? You're close enough to Chicago to do away rotations there.
