Membership to AOFAS

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm wondering if anyone has tried to apply for membership with American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Surgery and what response did you get. The website specifically doesn't include DPM. Does it mean that we DPMs cannot be members and cannot attend their conferences?

Thanks!

AOFAS membership is for MD's as this is an MD organization but you can attend AOFAS meetings as a DPM. I personally have been to their meetings and have had DPM colleagues present manuscripts/posters there as well. I should note that MD's co-authored their manuscripts/posters as well.

I think it would be pretty rare for a DPM to present at the AOFAS conference without a MD orthopod also affiliated with the research project. Same could be said for DPMs publishing in JBJS, FAI or any other non-podiatric medical journal. Although recently, a paper by Schuberth on gutter impingement was an "all-DPM" paper which was published in FAI.

I believe there is prejudice against DPMs as the rates to attend the last AOFAS national conference were significantly higher for DPMs than any other non-MD/DO medical specialty.

I agree.

Dr. Schuberth is an exception even by MD-standards. In my opinion, he is the best speaker at the podium and probably the most practical when it comes to reconstructive foot and ankle surgery.
