Well it's been a while since I came here for the pre-allo forum. Way back in 2001. Basically was on here nonstop for camaraderie and support through the whole process. It's strange to look back, but in the end it's been quite a journey. Finished undergrad in '01, Entered medical school in '02, residency in '07, starting fellowship in '12 --- and to top it all off, one of the people I met on SDN, I'm randomly doing fellowship with! 😀 We didn't even realize it until we were on an interview together and started talking about the whole process and SDN came up.

I made a few good friends through SDN. Back then, myself, Jablrekt, UCLA2K, papasmurf, seabass....a lot ended up rooming with on interviews, and staying good friends with. Unfortunately, it looks like SDN has an anti-grandpa law since you can't see any of my posts pre-2002...or maybe because I just violated every single cyber-law on this website....but it was all worth it...

Well, basically, to make this post somewhat pre-allo related - it's a tough effin road. Really know what you are getting into before you do it. Don't do it because everyone else around you wants to do it. I don't know much about how tough the competition is now - but i'm sure it continues to get harder and harder. Which is good - we want creme of the crop. When you do it, have a life. I party my balls off. Shiz, something I think I am a chick b/c I look down and I'm like "crap, where did my balls go?" And then I realize I was partying so hard with four loko they are on the block I just passed....so i Sissy walk over to them and beg them to jump back on and next thing you know there they are. Back in their proper spot.
Alas, I tend to digress - What are we thinking - med school.....ahh...yea.....everyone had an opinion on where you should go ...its a lot like *****holes - everyone has one.....so, make you decision based off what you liked a lot but also based on their rank....I may stroll through occasionally if SeaBass comes back and joins me.....we are always welcome to more questions and hopefully help all you out 😉

6 years of med school. Props.

Otherwise, inb4coolstarrybra

Cool post.

Damn, I was a 4th grader in 2001 .

If you don't mind my asking, did you take a break after medical school? What for?

Otherwise, inb4coolstarrybra

Got me - Sorry! Tripping off a watermelon loko....

Grad UC Berkeley in '01,
Year off for research in 01/02
Started med school in '02
Year off research between 3/4 years
So graduated med school '07
Residency 5 year program starting in '07
Fellowship 1 year starting '12

So what surprised you about med school/residency?

would you have done anything differently?

Jeez I was in 8th grade back in 2001. That seems like a lifetime ago.

Anyway, welcome back Scooby! I hope you stick around for awhile :luck:

Damn, you craze, Doo, you craze.

Riveting tale, Chap.

You appear to have taken a handful of shrooms somewhere in the third paragraph.

just curious, what made you return after 4 years without posting?

whats ur specialty? do you need A wife?

Did we use to hang, Scooby? I remember talking to Dr. Cox back in the day. Ah to be young again! I was a medic student back in 2001. SDN was different then. The Lounge actually was the place to be.

Congratulations, BTW!!!!!

Damn i'm an old dog....Break during medical school to do a year of research - it was a great thing because learned a ton about research, how to do it, more depth in the field I wanted to do....and b/c I had a crapload of free time which served as a much needed break from medical school drudges. I did it in a great city, where I had some close friends who also enjoyed balancing life off with a little ETOH, women, and more women.

Lots of people I know took a break for a year to do an MPH, a year of research, travel, etc in medical school. Nothing has to be done in a straight shot. There's always room for breaks here and there if you need it. Don't feel you have to go nonstop. If you're gonna blow your load, take a minute to compose yourself and then resume. 😀

and to your reply --- Surprised me and done differently...

Surprised - People in medical school aren't all dorks who have no personal life. I was pretty lucky with a talented medical school class. Good group of people who really came from a variety of backgrounds. Also, surprised at the amount of work that there was - you know what you are getting into, sort of...but it's a lot of crap - go to a PASS/FAIL school no matter what...f' the grading system...
Also, all the schooling doesn't prepare you for how to handle dealing with di#%$. I recommend becoming a prostitute for a year or so if you take some time off. That way you can learn to deal with a ton of dilznick. (jk - don't go become a prostitute, get herpes, and sue me..please...) Like seriously, people are dou$hebags - For example, now I'm a chief resident, and an intern calls me about a consult today and I'm trying to help him by telling him what services he needs to call and providing him phone numbers - which is more than most people in my field would ever do -- and then he starts giving me attitude and says "I can be brash and have attitude" --- at that point I should have told him I was busy with his Mom and hung up on him....but I remained calm and just told him he had to contact another service for his consult...Basically, all this studying/reading/etc doesn't prepare you for what it's like in the real hospital. And residency doesn't prepare you for the real life afterwards either. Consults now = work. Later, consults = money. Incentive changes our outlook. Check out Freakonomics.

Differently, Would have studied some of the more relevant stuff more.... Biochemistry, etc etc isn't going to play much of a role in medicine unless you are doing PHD or whatever. Whatever you are thinking of going into, try to really really deepthroat that firehose of knowledge.

Ah....seriously, I wish

I was interviewing for fellowship and was randomly talking with another applicant I had become friends with throughout the process. She mentioned SDN, and I mentioned I used to be on it --- We both mentioned our names and next thing you know we both started laughing because we had known each other online 10 years ago and talked a lot...but never met in person until now....pretty wild world....
👍👍👍

I hope that the people I meet in med school are as cool as this guy. Seriously, anyone who mentions previous (or current) ingestion of 4loko is okay in my book. 👍

I think another one of your threads was resurrected not to long ago, something about eating poop to get into the school of your dreams or something like that.

Meeeee! It was pretty crazy to be standing in an OR at Harvard of all places and to realize who I was standing next to of all people. And now looking forward to a year of fellowship fun together :meanie:

People I knew back on SDN in the Lounge are now married and have SDN babies together. Now that is crazy. Sorry Scooby, not bearing your love children... 😛
