My preceptor has been in practice for over fifty years and we were talking about old methods of treatments. One that came up was something called Mendel's throat paint. He can't remember the exact mixture but I was able to track down that it was an Iodine based solution which was used to coat the back of a patient's throat. The chief complaint would range from sore throat to difficulty swallowing, burning. I was wondering if any one has heard of this, and it's chemical make up. If you can point me in a better direction where I can get some information on this particular type of medical history I would really appreciate it. I guess it's this months "student get me that white whale" search, although I think it's slightly more interesting and less dangerous.

Hi,
Your post came up while I was searching for Mendel's throat paint...I've definitely heard of it...as kids our throats were constantly swabbed with it to relieve sore throats and tonsillitis. Incidentally the reason I was searching for it is...is because i just ended up with tonsillitis and was prescribed a Betadine gargle. It tastes exactly like Mendel's paint!
It's composition is most likely Iodine and Glycerine...

I think it still can be found in certain drugstores in India.

For sore throat I Rx magic mouthwash:

30ml liq bendryl + 60ml Mylanta + 10ml of viscous lidocaine

Personally If I feel a sore throat coming on I use chinese hot mustard. Cleans out the sinuses too.

Your post brought back a memory of my Bacteriology professor tell the class (back in 1978) of how she had strep throat as a child and her doctor painted her mouth with Gentian Violet.

Love Gentian Violet. Best antiseptic/antifungal out there.
