Hi everybody,

Sorry if this question was posted before, but can you mention DO shadowing on MD applications and vice versa (MD on Do app.)? Meaning, would MD schools still consider it equally significant and noteworthy if someone shadowed an MD for a bit, but also shadowed an Do for a while?

Thanks!

Just call it physician shadowing for the MD application. Emphasize the DO shadowing in the DO application.

I'm in the same spot. In for answers.

I shadowed both MD and DO physicians, discussed both shadowing experiences on both apps (AMCAS and AACOMAS) and during interviews when asked about my shadowing and/or about what makes a good doctor/etc. Got accepted at both DO & MD schools and all the interviewers seemed to receive my shadowing experiences well (you just have to remember what type of school you're interviewing at that moment and also to be sure NOT to dismiss/degrade the other degree when asked about their differences).

I did have MD interviewers curious about my DO shadowing and vice versa, so do be prepared for curious interview questions. It's not something to be ashamed of or thought of as a negative, however; I wanted to see both degrees in action and I did (and I got to see some awesome physicians at work regardless of degree).

EDIT: also, follow @gyngyn's advice with regards to describing the shadowing on your apps.

If you don't mind me asking ... what kind of curious questions?

Things like (from an MD program):
-Well what do you think about osteopathic medicine?
-Are you applying to both types of schools?

From both types:
-What are the differences? (be very ready for this question--it's very common, especially at DO schools...but also some MD schools if you mention shadowing a DO)

I think I may have even been asked which physician was better (the MD or the DO). Basically, be sure you know the similarities/differences & stay calm/neutral when answering.
