Met with my doctor today and he turned out to be the single greatest encourager of my plans for medical school. My doc got wind of my desire for medical school through my wife, she mentioned it to him and she walked away with his personal cell phone number in her hand. I managed to setup up a date and time to meet (he is a busy guy after all) and ended up having an hour and a half long conversation with him. The conversation started out pretty much like I expected it to, he asked why I wanted to become a physician. I guess I answered all his questions correctly because he became very enthusiastic, said the reasons I gave him were the same reasons he became a doc and became very energetic. From there the conversation just took its course and went to school, family, job, and the future. He did mention PA as a route, saying that its an option to consider, especially because I am starting out a bit older but that ultimately that was a choice I had to make. My doc did say that regardless of which route I took make sure that it was a choice that I would be happy with, he also said that if I did make the plunge into medical school I wouldnt regret it. Thats how that meeting took place, just a very good experience all around. At the end he made me promise that I would come shadow him a few times, he also offered to arrange shadowing with any other docs in his group as well as with his PA. He also offered to put me in contact with docs from other specialties that he knew. I left with a great feeling of encouragement and I have been energized ever since. I just wanted to share my experience in hope that it might offer some encouragement to others.
