Hi all,

I've done my fair share of research on these forums and I know Alliant isn't highly regarding among the community here. Alas, I didn't dedicate myself enough during my undergrad and graduated with a 2.5 GPA and a BA in Psych from UC Riverside and most programs require at least a 3.0. That led me to Alliant which seems to be a professional school but seems accredited by all the necessary boards that grant licensure.

I plan to go into private practice eventually after licensure and I know it is extremely difficult to gain an internship position as it is, much less graduating from a professional school. My question is this, my dad is a board certified Psychiatrist so interning with him would be my main option but I wasn't sure if there was any sort of rule or law prohibiting him from being my "supervisor" during my 3000 hours internship period. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm also located in California if that makes any difference.

It really depends on the state and what they allow as a supervisor. Typically, a supervisor needs to be board certified to supervise interns. It can't just be anyone. I come from a clinical mental health counseling background and my supervisors have all been certified as a supervisor by the board. I would double check with the California Board to see if that's plausible. My guess is that it wouldn't count due to the fact he's your father and that he's not certified by the MFT board to supervise interns.

Remember: MFT's and Psychiatrists are two completely different fields.

Thank you for your reply!

My dad is board certified and from what I read on the cal state licensing site all it would require for him to supervise me is for him to take a 6 hour "Training Course". I will check with the state board to see if there is a conflict of interest there.

As noted previously, you really want to confirm that he can provide supervision as your father. When reviewing licensure/internship requirements for some states (think CA was one of them), you could not have someone related to you supervise your hours.
