I've had some training for an MFT before the LPCC license appeared in California. I am going back to school now and trying to decide on which license. I'm leaning toward the LPCC for a variety of reasons. The main drawback is that the hours accrued during practicum during coursework doesn't count so you have to earn all your hours after your degree.
On the other hand, the differences in scope of practice and training appeal to me. There's assessment and psychopharmacology, as well as more specifics in career counseling and substance abuse. And your scope of practice is both individuals and groups, meaning that if I wanted to offer something to the local psychiatric facility, which lacks any sort of therapy, I would be more able to do that.
I just wonder about having that license instead of the more recognized MFT. Also about the extra time getting hours. this is my second career so I feel pressure to get to work soon, but I'm wondering if the extra time would be worth it in the long run.
