How are these two pediatric programs? How would they compare? Any issues with them not being in free-standing pediatric hospitals? What about the fact that BCRP is present in Boston and that Duke has competition from nearby UNC, does this affect things to the point of bringing down the tertiary aspect of these hospitals? How resident- vs. fellow-driven are these hospitals?

Just trying to weigh whether training at MGH pediatrics (or Duke pediatrics) would mean getting far less zebras and research opportunities than at some other more renowned peds programs.

Any input greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Duke always looks good on a resume...

I think you guys overthink these things at this stage of your career. You really just want good pediatric clinical training at a place where you get to see a wide variety of pathology and a lot of cases. Whether or not there is a lot of research going on at the same university, should not influence your decision too much. In fact, if I hear that a resident spent so much time on research during residency, then I will be wary of their clinical skills.

As it turns out, a lot of the places with wide pathology and high volume of cases are also the ones doing most of the research. But that is not always the case, and you shouldn't be caught up in this quest for a research institution.

When you are looking for faculty positions (or fellowship positions) you can worry about research opportunities. Noone is going to hire you into a research academic faculty position based on where you did your residency (cause you're not expected to do research as a resident).. That's what fellowship is for, including fellowship in academic general pediatrics if that's what you're going for.

Remember, you're a doctor first. Taking care of patients - that's the goal.
