The interview season is coming to an end and I'd be happy to answer any specific questions anyone would have about MGH.

I'll bite. My interview day at MGH was fantastic and I spent an extra day rounding with a Bigelow team to get a flavor for how things work. Thanks for coming to answer questions! How did you choose to rank MGH so highly compared to other top programs (e.g. BWH, UCSF if you considered them)? How do you feel about the proposed changes to the Bigelow system for next year?

vrq525,
I didn't interview at UCSF but did interview at the 3 Harvard hospital. I think the comparison has been made before, but they're all excellent programs with fantastic clinical training. I do think that the MGH's Bigelow system lets intern take on a great deal of responsibility early on and it's a fantastic way to learn to work as a team and learn from other residents' experience.

With the new work-hour regulation, I don't think the experience will change much. Instead of a noon to noon call, it will probably become a 6pm to noon. The caveat is that the sign-out needs to be longer/more complete, which is probably already the case in most programs with an established night float system.

Cheers!

I was really impressed with the MGH categorical program, but I don't think its quite right for me. I went into interviews feeling that (and still feel strongly that) that I want a Primary Care residency training (won't go into why here). I was hoping that MGH's PC would marry the best of both worlds, and was kind of disappointed by the PD for primary care, and could not get a good read on the "personality" of that training track.

Do you know much about the PC program? Does the PC PD improve if you get to know her better, and are the residents happy with the program leadership? Is the primary care program seen by residents as a coherent program-within-a-program? One intern described it as more like "a minor" at college, but maybe s/he didn't know what they were talking about.

thanks so much. I think its an awesome institution and really want to feel comfortable that I'm ranking it fairly.

Internmed2010,

Thanks for offering to help us out! Could you possibly post the fellowship match list for the past year or two if you have it? On the interview day, we were only given the aggregate list of places people matched at over the last 10 years, instead of a yearly breakdown. I usually take this as a minor red flag at other programs, since it doesn't specify whether people were applying in their 2nd or 3rd years and could potentially cover up a few weak years. That said, because this is MGH, I highly highly doubt that their fellowship match list needs to be covered up in any way, so I wasn't sure what to make of it all. If you have any input on this and could post the yearly list, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

I don't know the PC PD personally, but the PC residents do all love her. The PC track form a pretty cohesive group in that that they have their own events and retreat. They also get priority over choosing continuity clinics and sites, for example if one`s interested in particular aspect of primary care medicine (women`s health, underprivileged clinics).

Also, despite the fact that PC interns have their events, they fit very well with the rest of the group, and I truly feel that on the inpatient side, no distinction is made between a categorical, PC or prelim intern.

Sorry Drax4 I can't help you there as I don't have a match list. I feel that the program probably listed the 10 year aggregate to make it easier to read rather than giving a 10 page year by year breakdown.

I do know for example that in cards, last year fellow placement include 2-3 at MGH, and at least 1 at UCSF and Brigham, which are all top notch programs in a very competitive sub-specialty.

Intermed2010,

Thank you for offering up your advice. I really enjoyed my MGH interview day and was thoroughly impressed.

I was wondering if people who match at MGH all typically get the recruiting calls/ranked-to-match type e-mails. After looking at many of the threads on sdn it appears that MGH often does send along these messages and I am trying to gauge if it is a bad sign that I haven't received such correspondence (except for a nice but somewhat generic reply from my thank you note).

I am trying to decide between two Boston schools and while it may very well not matter who is ranked 1 vs. 2 in the end I was trying to figure out if not hearing anything back from MGH was still an "OK" sign.

It seems that the "famous" MGH ranked-to-match mail will come sometime during the second week of February.

Good luck!

kind of a random question, but anyone at mgh, or anyone who has rotated there, or harvard med students could answer. how's at&t vs verizion reception at the hospital? debating which iphone to get...

Hi can you tell me options for rental housing around MGH for residents ......where do most residents live?

is it worthwile doing an IM subI at MGH if you're not a "MGH level" applicant to begin with? my rationale is that doing well there might get you a good letter for elsewhere, but what do you guys think...specifically the MGH resident

How heavily does MGH look upon AOA status? I imagine if you are from Harvard, Hopkins, etc then they will be more forgiving then if you are from a mid-tier school (like mine) but will they allow a strong step 1 score make up for it? Is there anything in particular to MGH that they look for in applicants (away rotation at MGH, sub-I finished before MSPE sent out, etc.)? Obviously they are research oriented but is there anything else?
