Miami

Pros:

+ Location, Miami is beautiful (pretty sure I’ll be mainly studying tho)

+ Miami is now pass/fail!!

+ pretty well known in the medical community with a great match list

+ with a scholarship it comes around to 26k cheaper a year

+ pretty big research focus, interested in research

+ the school and the city seem more diverse which is important to me

+ Bascom Palmer eye institute best in the US for ophthalmology (not really interested but it is an option)

+ I’m from Florida so it’s not too far from my hometown

+ Administration seemed like they really cared on interview day

+ really easy to get exposure at Jackson and clinical training is apparently as early as your first year

+ really diverse patient population and cases

Cons:

- expensive COL
- I believe a couple years ago there was a scandal with a med student, idk if it will affect me tho
-Facilities are apparently a lil older (didn’t really notice)

Wake forest

Pros:

+ N Carolina is also beautiful
+ Also Pass/Fail
+ brand new medical school
+ slightly higher research rank on USnews (only like 1 or two spots tho)
+ lay prestige from undergrad? Idk how significant or well known Wake is tho, one of my friends hasn’t even heard of it).

Cons:

- more expensive
- Winston-Salem is nice but doesn’t seem like there’s much to do
- hate the cold and snow
- match list is still great, but doesn’t seem as great as Miami’s

DISCLAIMER! I AM ON WAKES WAITLIST

Now that we’ve gotten that out the way... Miami was one of my dream schools for many reasons. The patient population that you will be exposed to is one like any other. You will be in one of the most beautiful cities in America, filled with people amazing people from all over the globe. The beaches are gorgeous and the food is spectacular. It not being P/F was my only con but now it’s P/F.... literally perfect in my eyes lmao. A single rank on US news doesn’t mean a thing, Miami was ranked higher than wake last year. The research conducted at UM is amazing and there is ton of opportunity to get involved. I’m jealous of your choices, but I’d go Miami from the most unbiased position I can stand given my current state.

I appreciate the disclaimer and thorough response. It was honestly difficult to make the pros and cons list Bc they both seem great. I was already leaning towards Miami and if I end up going there I hope my Wake spot goes to you

Eh I don't go to Miami but I am from the area and I think it's really overrated: It's hard to get by if you don't speak Spanish, traffic is crazy, rent is high, it's hot, etc

I think he is implying the city, which I am also from, so it really depends what you are looking for. I love it here and you can get by more than fine without speaking Spanish...lmfao. The SCHOOL is definitely underrated if anything.

Interesting, I’ve visited a couple times and I always loved it, and that’s good to hear

Yea I don’t blame you, I’m going to leave it at that before someone misinterprets my genuine honesty. I just needed to comment when I read the claim that “it’s hard to get by if you don’t speak Spanish” lol. Thats definitely not the case, everyone (please don’t get technical, I know “everyone” is pretty strong) speaks English. But yes, there are more Spanish speakers than most other cities in America, which I consider to be a good thing if anything.

Um the majority of population is Spanish Speaking; yes you can get by without speaking Spanish but many (if not most) of your patients will not speak good or any English.

I would still choose UM because of the cost

There is literally **** **** to do in Winston Salem. I would have ranked them to match because they would have been my dream program otherwise. If you’re the type to want to enjoy the city you’re in, Winston Salem ain’t it.

Any particular reason why Wake is your dream institution?
