Michael DeBakey the godfather of heart surgery under-went heart surgery himself in Feb. and is now recovering. At 97 he is the hero all medical students should aspire. I met him in January 2005 at UNC-Chapel Hill's student research day. The day began with two presentations from top surgeons at UNC, he presented their research as if they had cured cancer. The media present likely witnessed the greatest verbal knockout punch since Kennedy embarassed Nixon in the presidential debate of 1960. At 96 DeBakey demanded more aggressive approaches to treating patients than either doctor presented. I will never forget the look of shock-and-awe on each doctor's face, DeBakey followed quickly with redeeming words for each presentation. Still, I remember feeling the balance in the room forever changed doctors, nurses, and students all on the same level as healers.
Dr DeBakey also stated that day that doctors are smarter than ever have been before but bedside manner is at an all time low... as we enter this field of medicine lets us all remember that we are here to help people not just cure injures and diseases.

Please post any thoughts on Dr DeBakey and keep him in your prayers.

Dr. DeBakey is definitely a hero especially when it comes to the field of Heart Surgery. Dr. DeBakey is amazing in everything he does so I've read, I dream to be a leader in medicine that way. He's one of the guys I'll always remember being a aspiring pediatric heart surgeon myself.

I'll keep him in my prayers.

I met the great Dr. DeBakey several years ago too. I listened to him talk about a heart pump he is working on with NASA based on Archimedes screw. He is an amazing man and one of the reasons why I have chosen medicine as my life's work. God Bless Michael DeBakey. I hope his recovery is a speedy one.

I have an article on Dr. DeBakey posted on my refrigerator, so I can see it everyday. It reminds me that a profession can really be a life's work. He has made such a superb contribution to medicine. I aspire to in my 90s and still actively making a difference on a daily basis---thanks to him 🙂

Its pretty cool that his advancements in cardiology probally made his own survival possible. I think he went to Tulane

I respect him about as much as I respect you. That is he is just a man. Whether he was a good doctor or not. I sure hope he gets better. But fact is dude is gonna die sooner than later.

Its fine to admire people. I just thought the level of hero worship, particularly in the intial post was masturbatory at best. I find that off-putting.
But hey thats just an opinion. I'll leave y'all to keep on truckin.

Three interesting facts about Michael DeBakey:

1) Michael DeBakey's tears can cure cancer, to bad he has never cried.

2) Michael DeBakey can speak braille.

3) When Michael DeBakey was born he flew out of his mother and kicked the doctor in the face. Nobody delivers Michael Debakey except Michael Debakey.

...Watch out Chuck Norris, the eyes of Michael Debakey are upon you

I'm sorry, but this is so disrespectful to Dr. DeBakey. Comparing him to Chuck Norris when Jack Bauer is the more appropriate reference? Bch plz.

Ahhh... thats cute. Someone needs a hug. Having heros is very important, for exmaple your lack of a productive role-model, it helps people achieve and exceed the previous work done.
I admire Dr DeBakey for his work ethic and his determination to instill strong values and thought into medicine. I hope one day you can find someone with similar goals to aspire.

How nervous would you be performing HEART surgery on this guy who probably was your mentor or role model in surgery?
Hey atleast he can give you a few pointers before the operation starts and he's only a knob turn on the gas away. 🙂

Can you imagine this....halfway through the surgery, the surgeon decides to wake DeBakey up to ask him a question about the heart lung machine or something of the sort.

If only life was like a cartoon sometimes. 👍

Haha.

Just imagine how flattering it must have been to be the surgeon he chose. It's like, "I'm the best in the world..and since I can't operate on myself, I chose YOU!" 👍

hahaha at this thread and the bickering over a pioneer in medicine.

in any case, i greatly respect this man. i can only dream about being a surgeon of half his caliber.
