Hey, I am guessing that you are new to this forum, but this site has a interview feedback section that gives reviews from people that have been to each school...it will help a lot. (It is the pull down menu near the top).

For those who recently received a Michigan interview, when is your interview? I haven't heard from them other than my application is complete, so I'm just wondering if I will be interviewing in 2004 or 2005 if I get an invite.
Thanks!

Hi. Mine is on 19th. It was earlier than that, but due to "interview conflict", I had to reschedule..my application was received by schools on July 27..??

good luck

bump --

What's the latest on Michigan? I'm particularly interested in hearing back from people whose application was received by the school in late September, early October...Getting any word on interviews yet? If so, what's the earliest date you're being offered?

My application was recieved in late September (meaning that all parts of the application were recieved at the school by that time) and I was invited to an interview last month.

They received my AADSAS mid september, and I haven't gotten anything besides one postcard telling me my application is complete, and another asking me to not call them anymore asking about my application (I only called them once to check). I went to Michigan undergrad, and still haven't been invited yet. Those bastards!

GO BLUE!

Great, thanks for the update! Sounds like we're in the same boat. 😉 Keep me posted...

Any idea how many non-residents Michigan accepts normally?

I applied to Michigan, and didn't respond to missing documents they requested - after getting interviews from all the other schools I applied to. I am an out-of-state student to the school, and was not sure Ann-Arbor is a place I see myself attending school at. I will stay Ohio if I everything goes well at OSU.

i think they try to accept something like 40% out state and 60% in state.

Just came back from Michigan...
Whew~~!!
They have a great CAMPUS, #1 NIH funding, a research institution
small town Ann Arbor, good environment, reasonable living expenses
Dental school just finished building the SimLab last year, so it's pretty new
Dr. Marilyn Woolfolk, the assistant dean of admissions, is SO HILLARIOUS~~!!
She is the funniest person there. Everyone invited liked her.

Yes, as you probably read from the interview feedback, interview happens during lunch. It gets very noisy and crowded, but they do so on purpose.
They told us that having multiple interviews in the same room while other people have lunch will ease your PAIN~~ does it really?? for me, it worked.

There were so many out-of-staters including myself. The interviewers were all faculty members who were very pleasant to talk to. They didn't really write down anything.. But they read your applications so be prepared for it. It's just a casual informal conversation which will last about 10~15 minutes. Make sure you finish your lunch QUICK~ ANd brush your teeth or chew gum

Accomodation: use the Lawyers club or Law Quadrangle
just few minutes away from the dental building... $60 including taxes
-walking distance -the room isn't that great but it's on Campus..
-lot of places to eat outside few blocks away

Ride: call the $22 / $20 return trip one... Airport shuttle service
they are the cheapest and fastest...

And, enjoy your interview. It 's just like other interviews... Nothing special.
**it seems public schools like Pittsburgh & Michigan offer great lunch**

mwsung, is michigan your 1st choice?

don't know until Dec 1st...

i've been to many schools so far, but nobody guarantees my acceptance into any of them... so I decided to forget about 1st, 2nd choice business, and relax until Dec 1st, out D-day

Is Michigan your first choice? My jaw just about hit the floor when I went to the campus. I'm from Indiana and was all about going to IU but after interviewing there last Friday, man o man.

Everything was presented so nicely and organized. All the faculty were so easy going and great to talk too. And Ann Arbor is a very very nice town.

Amen to that man...

This is kinda off topic but...
When making comparison of different schools, I don't look at whether or not the institution is clinic- or research-based because there is no such thing.
Speciality....

Those schools with the lack of patient pool will be focusing on research and vice versa... Wherever we graduate from, we won't be READY to practice right away. Schools are schools. They teach us and provide what they can. We students learn as much as can cuz it's our careers that we are studying for.

I don't care too much about this cuz I don't want to get specialized. Hate doing the same thing over and over... GP is good because I do different things everyday..

So, I decided to compare two things only: the tuition & the campus/environment... USC/boston will be my LAST CHOICE... very very last... stupid tuition...

U Pittsburgh isn't that bad... It's small city but has everything big cities have
U Michigan is ok... major university in the state, great reputation world-wide
wonderful campus
Loma Linda... religious, PERFECT EMVIRONMENT TO STUDY
NO DRUGS NO ALCOHOL, NO SEX
wonderful............

these are my top 3 choices

So I take it USC didn't impress you much? Tuition does seem a bit high from what I've heard through the grapevine.

this is totally off topic from michigan and i do not mean to start anything new here, but your post just brought a quick question to mind regarding loma linda. if you are married in dental school, which lots of people are since we'll be 22+, are you still not allowed to have sex even though it is your husband/ wife? just curious.

anyways about michigan... yeah, from what i have seen from interviewing at other schools, nobody else has been able to match the combination of low tuition, great location/environment, good program and really nice faculty and students that I observed at my interview there.

Biogirl -- Michigan is notorious for their strict residency rules...Is there any way to curtail them? Like, I'm not a resident now, but say I work part-time or something for a year...Will that allow me to become a resident?

no. i know someone who has lived and worked and went to undergrad in michigan for the past 7 years or something and they were denied residency. their whole family lives here and everything. their undergrad school here in MI gave them in state tuition but michigan would not for dental school. I think you pretty much have to be born here to have residency at michigan. I'd of course advise you to speak to them personally before just giving up, but at my interview the dean herself flat out admitted that yeah if you are out of state now you are going to be out of state to us forever. furthermore whatever status you have as a D1 is locked in for the rest of the time you are at school there. so, i think you can pretty much plan on paying out of state if you go there 🙁 it is still cheaper than any of the private schools though.

Argh, not what I wanted to hear, but thanks for the response!

So, question...Anyone called Michigan lately? What the heck is going on??! My application has been completed for 6+ weeks and no word from them, only school who hasn't sent me anything. I think I'm competitive stat-wise, although I'm out of state...Is it worth the effort to call them or should I let them take their time?

I just got an interview from them and I sent in my application in july. I think they just start with in state applicants first (thats what I was told at least). You should definitly call and make sure that nothing is missing. Good luck

i am pretty sure they don't just start with in state residents because i was part of their first interview group and there were a fair number of people from out of state (we all had to go around and say to the group where we were from and whatnot).
If you already got verification in the mail that your file is complete with them, I don't think calling would accomplish much except possibly annoy them, especially seeing as they are going to have tens of kids calling already on the big 12/1. so... if it was me, i would just sit tight and see what happens.

you know it is 1 week until dec. 1 when you spend every waking hour that you aren't in class, eating, sleeping, or doing homework, checking this board 🙂
anyways, i was wondering if anyone who got accepted to michigan last year happens to be reading the pre-dental board, did you get your letter right on 12/1? or before, or a few days after? did the good news come in a tell-tale packet, or a scary little legal envelope?

i'm pretty sure working part-time in MI won't get you the residency. you have to work full-time in MI, pay MI tax for like 3 years (i think), and then you will "possibly" become a resident. oh, you gotta be 25 years or older or something like that. otherwise, you're considered a dependent and they're gonna look at your parents' tax return record. and the same story for the parents: they should work full-time in MI + MI tax for several years.. :scared:

I got my Michigan letter finally the day of their Ohio State Game last week. I just set it up for jan 28.

As for the residency thing, I didn't apply for it as an undergrad, but I understand it is tricky. Anecodotally, I had a friend who was on track for a 7 year architecture program, and she had to buy property to even have a shot at it. I don't know if she would have gotten it or not, because she dropped out to live at rainbow gatherings out of her rv 👍

Ohhh, that's encouraging. At least we all know that Admissions is still alive and kickin' at Michigan. 😛 Congrats and good luck!!! :luck:

I was wondering that same thing. I am in-state and they were waiting on my new DAT scores but they have had those now for a few weeks and still nothing. I really don't expect to get in there but they could at least send me the big R in the mail.

so did anyone who interviewed try calling UMich today?
