Oat cell simply means "small cell". It is thought to originate from neuroendocrine calls (APUD cells) in the bronchus called Feyrter cells. They express varieties of neuroendocrine marks & may lead to ectopic production of hormones like ADH & ACTH that may result in paraneoplastic syndromes, & SIADH.

Oat cell carcinoma: Kulchitsky (APUD) cell of origin, tiny white, fishflesh primaries near hilum with early and widespread metastases; 15 micron almost-no-cytoplasm cells, paraneoplastic syndromes include, Eaton-Lambert, inappropriate ADH, Cushingism from ACTH, more; not hypercalcemia. Bombesin's the autocrine growth factor. Remember secondary hyperparathyroidism is commonly caused by hypercalcemia!

Squamous cell carcinoma: Keratin pearls, bridges (prickles, desmosomes), single-cell apoptosis (single-cell keratinization), tonofilaments; large central lesions with a tendency to cavitate; parathyroid-hormone- like activity raises serum calcium; men smoking non-filtered cigarettes.

**Answer should be SCC, you probably got oat cell carincoma from a very very old exam!
