Hi! I just joined this afternoon (while having a cup of tea... hence the name) and am relieved to find another source of information for pre-vets. I'm from New York and will be applying next summer.

Has anyone found an Microbiology course online from an accredited institution? I've been searching for a while and haven't come across one.

Also, is it detrimental to do 2 requirements online, because I can't find an appropriate Nutrition course anywhere nearby and may wind up doing that one online as well.

Thanks in advance! 🙂

i'm guessing based on the NY location that you'll be applying to Cornell...you'll have to do microbio lab for cornell's pre-reqs (or at least you needed it last year) which you obviously cannot do online. thus you may want to look into doing it at a local college.

I'm doing the animal nutrtion course "independent study" from OK state and don't mind it at all. I reccomend it.

I did a few courses online...general chem II (did the lab on campus), stats, and I think one more. I agree that if you have to have the lab, (I know you do for NCSU as well.) then you should find a brick and mortar place to take it. Good luck. :luck:

OK State was the Nutrition course I saw as well. I'm considering doing it in July and August.

I was aware of the lab requirement, but I don't realistically expect to get in to Cornell even though it's my in-state. If the lab will maximize the number of places I can apply, though, I'm sure I'll find a way to get it done "in person."

Thanks for the replies!

purdue offers an online nutrition course as well.

:welcome:

i've never heard of a micro class on-line, but i wanted to put in a plug for taking micro in-class if at all possible. micro is an absolutely awesome subject and learning the techniques, i think, is a major component. plus, a lot of the staining and culture procedures you will use at the animal hospital.

speaking of microscopy (clumsy transition, sorry) - found whipworm last weekend. parasites are so exciting!! :hardy:

Coming from an English major background, hands-down, Microbiology was one of my favorite all-time classes ever!

The lab rocked. We had an amazing instructor, and such interesting discussions and labs.

Now, I've also heard of people hating the course elsewhere, but, for the lab requirement at some places, and the potential to actually enjoy the class, maybe consider taking it somewhere versus online.

Good luck! :luck: And hey, you wouldn't be the first local chic not to feel the love from Big Red. 😡 I had a lifelong love/dream of Cornell vet until I got their Friday the 13th dated rejection letter and realized that it just wasn't going to happen for me there. 🙁
