Hi SDNers,

I am trying to take Microbiology + Lab for fall semester, but apparently my school has two types of Micro Class.

One is "bateriology" and is recommended by the pre-dental curriculum. However, due to the budget cut and so many people are trying to enroll it may be unlikely that I will be able to enroll.

The other is called "Medical Microbiology + lab" and I was wondering if I can take this course instead of recommended Bateriology. I figure it's just recommended class and DS wouldn't really care as much???

Please help,

Just called up a couple of schools U of M and Midwestern who required MBIO as pre-reqs..

They all said it's fine as long as the class is upper-div level and has a lab with it.

For your future reference.

Some schools require you to take a lab w/ a microbiology course (MWU is one, and I'm actually bored sitting in microbio lecture as I'm typing...). I would go with the one that offers the lab. I don't think it matters in the long run, but if the school you get in to requires a lab, you don't want to have to go back and take it (which is why I'm here :-/)

As a Microbiology Major, I can say that I have taken both classes. Bacteriology sounds like General Microbiology- where you learn the "basics" of the microbial world. However, Medical Microbiology is completely different (at least at my school). This class focuses mainly on host-pathogen interactions through different portal of entries (GI vs. Sexual vs. Respiratory etc...). IMO, this class definitely "sparks" more attention than General microbiology (or bacteriology). I'd say, if you have the opportunity, and if time permits, take both of them. You will learn a lot of valuable information. Hope this helps...let me know if you have any other questions.
