I was planning on taking microbiology at the University of Washington (microbiology is a dental pre-requisite at UW) next Summer, concurrent to my DAT study. But I'd also like to use that time to do some dental shadowing and observing. I'm starting to think that maybe I should postpone the microbiology till Summer 2009, before which I would already have submitted AADSAS (I'll say that I'm planning on taking microbio). My question is how much relevance does microbiology have on the DAT? Will paralleling taking microbiology with DAT study help me on the test, or will it be too time-consuming to properly do both.

I don't think Micro is that beneficial to the DAT. The DAT study guides have sufficient Micro material to prepare you for the test.

Well...I think microbiology has nothing to do with DAT Bio.
However, I saw some of the microbiology questions from DAT desteroyer which many people call it the best DAT book or whatever...

Thanks for the replies. Any other opinions regarding microbiology and DAT? I've only taken bio I & II, I'm hoping those, along with sufficient prep material, will help me through the test.

Well, I'll be taking it this upcoming spring semester. so ask me in may 😛

but yeah, I think the more important factor is that you would have to wait until august to take the dat if you want to take it after that... that's not that late but it doesn't seem necessary.

I would suggest getting all your materials in asap, which would mean taking the dat earlier on in the summer.

I can't say anything for sure since I obviously haven't taken it yet, but from what I heard, it doesn't make that big of a difference. I've heard biochemistry is rather helpful though. Unfortunately, I've also heard that it's really hard. So we'll see how that goes.

Good luck.

Thanks, I'm only planning to apply in 2009 anyway and just want to get the DAT out of the way this Summer, so time isn't an issue. BTW I'm also taking biochem this coming Spring. When are you going to take the DAT? I might just ask you about microbiology come May 😉
