Can anyone tell me what determine mid-tier school? My stats aren't very excellent and plan to apply mid-tier school. I checked the usnew pharmacy school ranking, is that mid-tier from 20 to 40ish?

as of today 2014, there are 133 pharmacy schools. Many would draw different lines for top, mid, and lower tier. Imho, top tier is from #1-20, mid tier is 20-60ish, 60ish-#133 is low tier.

"Mid tier" ranking of schools should only be a generally guide as it is not really telling if your stats are fitting for the schools you want to apply.

A more accurate method/strategy for your application would be looking at the schools of your interests and study the schools' annual admission stats of the applicants/admitted students/matriculating students to see if the schools would accept your stats and give you a good chance at interview/acceptance.

Go and check out PharmCAS's and AACP's lists of schools and published stats for those admission data for the schools. (Before you ask me again where the links are, GOOGLE for them... I am just too lazy now.... 🙂 )

It's usually pragmatic to pay in-state tuition, so you should rank all the schools in your state. There are also newer schools that are unranked.

oh oh lastly, I am looking at US NEWS ranking now, some are ranks not published.. beyond rank 80. These mean they are out of ranking so all lowtiers right?
i am trying to look for schools after rank 60-70 now. :zip::woot:

I don't really like that US NEWS ranking... its like 2 years old and has so many schools missing 🙁

I guess what you really meant is that there are too many new schools popping up the last 2 years and USNews just can't keep up 😉

you have to read the Methodology of USNews ranking. The ranking is based on peer-reviews and surveys/questionnaires. This method is certainly biased and not entirely accurate to reflect the true and whole pictures of the schools. But it is the most popular ranking I have seen for pharmacy.

Note that some schools chose not to participate in those peer-reviews/surveys/questionnaires.

Some other schools, because they are too new for other schools to give an accurate response to the surveys, did not receive any response thus received no ranking. This does not necessarily mean they are low-tier/ranked. Just means that they are simply new and nobody knows for sure how they would perform or rank yet.

Agreed mostly. While it certainly means something about the schools ranked in terms of their reputation among other schools' professionals, it isn't the end-all-be-all. Look more into whether you personally fit with different schools. Curricula vary widely (Pathways to choose, 2+2 Programs, 3-year Accelerated programs, level of clinical/industry/retail focus, etc.), acceptance standards vary, location and job opportunities vary... the list goes on.

Figure out what factors are most important to you and gauge how competitive you are when researching where to apply rather than blasting your app out to numbers 70 through 80 on the U.S. News Report.
