Hey I am just wondering if anyone has any experience with psychiatry residency programs in the midwest and where might be a good place to do an away rotation.

I did a search and found out a little bit about some of the programs, but a the information was slightly dated, and I couldn't find out anything about doing away rotations there. Housing would definately be a plus, and obviously not a big fan of paying application fees, but that shouldn't be a big factor.

I'd mostly like to get a good feel for what psychiatry residency would be like and get a good feel for the program.

Thanks for your help!

"Midwest" covers a large area. Ohio? Dakotas? Could you narrow it down?

Prefferably North Central: Illinios, Kansas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Dakotas

Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Colorado are getting out further, but are do-able,

Thanks!

When you start drifting into Big 12 country, it gets a little thinner, but no fretting. These are all of course reputations I've gleaned from various levels of personal experience.

In your first list, U Iowa (very biological) and UW-Madison are probably the A-list programs. I have a happy friend at Iowa, and spent a while on the phone w/ UW's PD one time, and he seemed like he'd be a great guy to work for.

Kansas and Minnesota both have solid reputations, not quite as well known as the other two. And of course the Chicago programs: Northwestern is a little more affluent, a famously rigorous program, and UIC is a little bit more of a blue-collar, roll-up-your-sleeves sort of program. Some folks are fans of the Loyola program, I have no idea about it. UC itself has a lot of skeletons in its closet. Compared to other cities its size and awesomeness, Chicago psychiatry is fairly weak.

On the periphery, Michigan, Wash U, and Cincinnati are probably the best programs in the Midwest (depending on if you call Pitt "Midwest" or "East Coast", although it seems far out of your preferred range). Michigan and Wash U (like Iowa) have 'biological' reputations, with Wash U sometimes being considered one of the most extremely biological programs in the country. Cincy seems to have a fairer balance, but is probably a notch below the other two in terms of prestige and ability to attract quality candidates. But the bipolar regime (Keck and Co) are so strong that they can't be left out of the discussion. I know very little about the U of Colorado, except that one of my favorite child attendings took a job there, and Doug Miklowitz is awesome. A lot of people on the trail seemed to want to interview there for whatever reason.

Point being, despite what some people tell you, there is quality to be had in the Midwest.

As Billy said, there are many options.
What you need to do is think about 1) where you are now, 2) where you want to live, and 3) where you want to start your career. Are you looking for an academic, university-based program, as billy emphasizes, or are you looking for community-based clinical training? Are you thinking about a fellowship, and if so what? And as someone else has said, going through the hassle of an away rotation is mostly for your own benefit and experience--it tends not to make a huge difference in how you match
Plenty of options.

As previous, plugging for my old program in South Dakota, new facilities, only about 3 year old, new hospital, ECT on-site, crack attendings and staff, program definitely cares about residents and Wednesday till mid afternoon set off for didactics, but area slightly saturated, likely will end up working more that 100 miles from site in Sioux Falls (I ended up in Wyoming 🙂). Still lots of jobs, not much competition, so your colleagues will be your network, not your rivals.

Thanks for the feedback on the programs. It definately helps. I'm more interested in clincal, and I lean towards a more biological approach, but not solely.

I welcome any other suggestions on places I should check out, maybe do a good rotation at in the fall.
