so, Ive been accepted to 2 programs thus far, the new MBS program at TCMC, the new med school in Scranton, and the MA program at Midwestern. The program at Scranton is not connected with any med school classes but is at a med school, and the Arizona program isn't connected to a med school at all, just a DO school.

Would I be doing myself a disservice by going to Midwestern if I am dead set on an MD and not a DO program? Is a school with a DO program thats been around for a little bit going to look better than going to a brand new MBS program that doesn't even have a reputation yet at scranton?

Also, Im waitlisted at EVMS and Cinci, still waiting to hear from Georgetown, Tufts, BU, Toledo, etc... Hope those waitlists get moving soon!

Thanks in advance.

Just as an aside, a DO school IS a medical school. Your chances at being accepted at a DO school would probably plummet if you insult them at an interview by telling them they aren't a medical school.

Second, from the bit of research I did after being accepted at PCOM's program, they have had some graduates go on to MD schools as well as DO schools.

I decided to go elsewhere, but I'm sure PCOM would have helped me become a doctor as well as anyplace, and a PM&R MD I've talked to has said that he WISHED he'd been a DO, as he's gotten into non-traditional types of therapies generally associated with DO's, and really enjoys both the procedures and results.

If you're that uncomfortable with a DO degree/school, then don't go there. I'm sure there are plenty of people who would love to take your place, and if you got an acceptance at a "medical school"'s program, then go there and I'm sure you'll do well.

please dont take my post as me belittling DO's, or anything like that. I am simply very set on wanting an MD and not a DO so I was wondering if going to a postbac that is loosely connected to a DO school is going to hurt my chances of getting into an MD program. Please do not take my post as insulting if that is how it reads, I haven't had enough coffee yet to make it sound less inflammatory 😉

Go to Midwestern not b/c it's a DO postbac but b/c you can maintain your GPA AND still learn. Look at the classes offered at PCOM, Midwestern AZ, or any other places and see that there is a big difference. Also, how many student get in and how many students get accepted should be the deciding factor for the post-bac program of your choice.

Barry Uni has many students coming in for the BMS but the percent of getting accepted into med schools (DO or MD) is lower than other program, for example.

DO postbac does not hurt your chances. MD residencies actively recruit DO graduates nowaday b/c they know that overall the competency of DO students can be better than their MD graduates. The problem with a lot of DO route is primarily the recognition: AOA refuses to list you on their directory if you did your residency at non AOA certified residency. But who cares if you're not listed or not. You still can do everything else exactly as a MD physician.

My point: DO is the SAME as MD in term of being able to practice a fully licensed physician and make the SAME amount of money. The only difference is people don't like to read more about the difference and go with the mainstream just to be safe!!!!! Read JAOA and Academic Medicine Journal or JAMA. JAOA and Academic Medicine journals are free online. You can conclude it for yourself what route you want to take. To me, it is essential very similar.

Hope that helps.

Being new, unless there is some real linkage to their medical school, I can't imagine the Scranton MBS program helping you much. Their MBS program might prove useful if it is a real SMP, but from the looks of it, this is another case of "what you make of it".

As for the program at Midwestern, it's not a real SMP. If you attend, you will only be improving your application to the professional programs at Midwestern. The only post-bacc program at a DO school that might give you the chance at a MD school will be at PCOM. PCOM has a history and is well-known (at least in NE). Typically those who attend the MA program at Midwestern understand the school's lack of recognition, but are wanting to attend a professional program at Midwestern. More importantly, since you are oppose to attending a DO program, I'd recommend against this program.

Tough decision, but in your case (no love for DO program), I'd risk going to Scranton if you do not get any more offers and are dying to do a program this fall.

^^^ thanks for the response, but thankfully I got into a program at BU so Ill be a GMS'er there! very excited about it as i didnt like my options as of a month ago...
